That is the Larkin Soap company Administration building, in Buffalo NY. The City tore it down for a parking lot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larkin_Administration_Building
Hello, The research also shows the same photo as part of the Mines Field car races. Mines Field is another location near what is now LAX. (short race from downtown Long Beach ... State Theater on Ocean Blvd cliff top overlooking the oceanfront below... to the Ford plant on Terminal Island, just across the L.A. River) So if it was this longer race to Mines Field where the LAX location is, it would be a 25 mile one way race or add in a fews laps of the unusual race course to cap off the advertised race. It is a possibility. This aerial view of Mines Field was taken circa 1930, almost two decades before before the airport was renamed Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). To tout the performance of the new flathead V8, LA Ford dealers provided Roadsters and recruited well-known driving stars. “They were to race on a new, purpose-built oiled dirt track near what is now Los Angeles International Airport. The Mines Field track had a long front straight and an ample viewing area for spectators, but to give fans a closer view of all the action the back straight bowed in toward the front. Slewing out of the east turn, drivers could hit 90 miles an hour on the front straight before downshifting into second gear for the west turn.” Jnaki A 1.9 mile dirt road course was opened in 1932, and used through until 1936. A shorter 1.56 dirt road course was used in 1934, hosting an AAA champ car race. The Los Angeles Speedway, a 1 mile B-shaped "oval" was built in 1936 on an area nearby on the same airfield. The whole area later became part of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Hah ! year I was born....knew there was something about it. Really,my dad had a '48 Chev ute down here and it looked familiar. Thanks.
I remember seeing the Dodge Chargers in Orange, Mass. could have been my first visit to a drag strip even if it was an airstrip. Thanks for the Christmas images of Holyoke.
