Hot Rods How many guys drive street brawlers?

  1. When the car makes you respect it then you know it's kind of edgy, walking the thin line of control or out of control is what puts a smile on your face.
    Sashay to the left, sashay back to the right like floating on air at times lol
    I have a video of me putting the t-bucket in the ditch, I felt the rear walking out, back and forth as I compensated with the wheel. Last one kept coming around and I knew it wasn't going back so I was off the gas and a little on the brake but it had it's momentum rolling and dumped me to my surprise.
    I've probably did that dance 100 times in that car and never lost it, always exciting but never scary. That day we all laughed at what happened but I gave it a little more respect for the unknowing on the next run lol

    Just saying it was a little disheartening to spend considerable time & money building a street/strip car that wasn't very good at either of those things.:( Too much motor/trans/gears for the street...too squirrelly for the track.:eek:
    I eventually gave up, sold the "built" 302/C6 to a Mustang buddy, and put in a stock 302/C4 and street gears...enjoyed it that way for a few years. :)

    That’s all I ever drove since I was in high school. My mom used to ride my ass about buying a new car and I used to tell her that for the money that one cost I can build a reliable hot rod and still have money in the bank. True I used to street race a lot and supplemented my income because of it so when I did break something I always had a replacement part sitting on the stand or on the shelf if needed. But for the most part I never had any issues. The only thing I learned from all this is that you don’t want to convert one to alcohol and take your wife Christmas shopping…..we about melted our eyes out whenever we got hung up in rush hour traffic :eek: :eek: It was no fun fanning the doors with no heat other than what the headers put out to warm the floorboards in 30* weather. Oh I miss those days……:rolleyes:

    I did buy a new car about 6 months after mom passed, to bad she wasn’t around to see it. Although I did hear something that sounded like a person flipping in the grave when I went to visit her after I got it:p

    Sorry fellas.

    I do not own it any more but I guess the Pusher counted as a street brawler. Gawd knows I did win a stoplight drag a time or two. I put 80K exactly on that truck (it rolled 80 on the odometer as I pulled into the drive of its new home).

    Lookin back I probably should have kept that truck.

  10. I'll be starting on my next drag/street car/hot rod real soon. I have been collecting parts for a few years. It'll be a chopped '30 coupe on a real '32 frame, real '32 shell, Magnesium Americans, 10.5" tire, big block Chevy, 4 speed. I'm shooting for 8 flat at 160mph. It'll be traditional as you can get for a fast hot rod...

  13. A goal to shoot for , for sure. It took me 3 years-seasons to get mine into the very low 9 second 1/4. Almost tipping into the 8's. Good luck with your endeavor. Road Kill Dave's F rod is at 8.50 naturally asperated BBC, big C.I.D. lots of suspension tuning to get there. I do not think it has been street driven however, only track time. My coupe is street driven , more then on the track these days.
     
  14. Sam built most of Freiburger's car. Also has driven it several occasions. Freiburger built the engine.

    Props to you for driving it regularly. A 9 second street car is a hand full to drive. An 8 second car will have way too many OT parts to even talk about here. Yes, there are 8 second cars that are driven. No, they will never be daily drivers.

    And as most know (hopefully the OP too), to be a regular 8 flat car, you better be able to dip into the 7's at will. Even harder to make streetable.

    In my many years of doing this crap I have found that folks who say "8 sec. car" mean it dipped into the 8's ! 8.99 is considered an 8 second car in many circles. Like was mentioned there is a world of difference between a car that runs consistently in the 8's & might be able to dip into the 7's VS a car like I hope to end up with when I get my OT back together which is a car that runs 9.30 consistently & will dip into the 8's with a balls out run, yet I can drive it to a cruise or show.

    How would you even get a 9 second car to hook on the street?

    My stuff is pretty slow (11.00's) and 1st gear is pretty much useless for anything but a slow roll on. 2nd gear isnt much better and this is with 235/70/15 BFG's. Running slicks on the street in my city is a good way to get your car towed if pulled over. DOT drag radials from my experience only work on groomed race tracks.

  20. Traction is always the problem on the street, unless it's a street in Mexico that's been prepped. When someone says they have a 9 second street car it normally means the car runs 9's on the track but can also be driven on the street.
     
  21. I built Freiburger’s car and tune his suspension. I’ll be building my car using the knowledge gained from doing his. Plus I’ll have 100 more horsepower… lighter etc. fingers crossed it works! And yes…my goal is low 8’s and compete at Drag Week which will mean I’ll have to drive it 1000 miles.

  22. Nobody said a car that will run 9 seconds on the track will duplicate it on the street, unless you have the opportunity to heat the slicks & the road is as smooth as a track. DOT drag radials seem to hook pretty good on my "Stubby" but have not ever tried them on a 9 second car. Much of it is about tuning the suspension properly.

  23. Yea Sam I get it and hope very much to see on here what you are doing . At my age, I guess mine is fast enough and has scared the shit out of me on some track runs;). On the street she is some what of a hand full especially in todays world of dumb ass drivers. Still fun, and is able to stay alive. I guess if I had the $ she would be well into the 8's and reliable on the street, but I'm happy. The car has to much history to bust it up.

  25. Yep. Mike Finnagan not long ago blew a 7000$ racing trans up on the first launch in his 8 second 55 chevy. This low ET shit is mega expensive.

    Having had the opportunity to look at Freiburger's car, and talk with him a little about it, I'm really impressed with your work. I think you can pull it off, you have a real good understanding of what's needed.
