    What is in a name?

White Front was a chain of discount stores in Southern California and the western United States from 1959 through the mid-1970s. The stores were noted for the architecture of their store fronts which was an enormous, sweeping archway with the store name spelled in individual letters fanned across the top.

The name White Front was said to refer to the practice of lining up appliances (so-called "white goods") like washers, dryers and stoves in front of the store, giving it a "white front."

    Hello,

Off of the I-5 freeway in south Orange County was a huge property off of Alicia Parkway. It was graded, new off ramps were made and the surface roads heading East were also upgraded. The property was almost 9 acres large. For a property in the big OC, 9 acres is huge.

But, it was one of the first developed properties to draw people to early Mission Viejo. A name for a sprawling development. In 1963, after a study was completed that indicated that a portion of the ranch would be ideally suited for a housing development, the O' Neill family decided to sell 10,000 acres for residential home sales.

The property was the first planned community in the OC and it has grown into a sprawling city that stretches from San Juan Capistrano/San Clemente to the South. (To Irvine in the North.) It is still growing as there is plenty of open land yet, undeveloped.

We did visit the model homes as our first house, but it was a drive to get to the coastal beaches and cities. Plus, the local shopping centers were also just starting and this location next to the freeway did a good business.

As times change, so do shopping choices. So, the building stayed the same, physically, but new owners took over for their chain of local/national stores. Names like GEMCO, TARGET come to mind. YRMV

And no wondering why the people loved her! RIP. Am proud to remember being part of thousands of school kids parading in honour when she visited Adelaide in 1954. Still have a New Testament,so marked, given to all of us to commemorate that special day. My grandaughter took to school recently to present as something old. She is seven.
