Some may dispute, but virgin is the best.

I find both mineral and synthetic oils smoke about the same out the exhaust, but the synthetic stuff definitely breathes less out the draft tube.

    There might be science involved.

Changing it is expensive though because it uses so much therefore I'm in the cheap-n-regular oil change crowd, meaning although synthetic is definitely better, at the rate I leave it on the ground, too expensive.

So, mineral oil is better because it costs less.

    Next question

  3. On the synthetic oil, I begrudgingly(cost) used Mobil 1 in an early off topic motorcycle and did a 18 day outback trip here in the Ozzie desert country of Western Oz and got the bike engine literally smoking hot most days, deep desert sand and high dunes day after day thinking I was killing the poor thing , didn’t have to add any oil and once home drained the oil thinking it was cooked, only to find it as clear and clean as the day it went in.
Then put it back in again and got huge miles out of it no troubles.
That was in the mid 90s , I can’t bring myself to use it in my cars now as the cost is to inhibiting but it is definitely much better than Dino oil on an experience level.

Our compressor sits on the back porch so a month or so ago I googled around to find some 20wt synthetic comp oil. Ordered up some Amsoil. Compressor loves it but since it was ordered I been hit by a barrage of internet spam like never before. I can NOT turn on my computer without seeing AMSOIL!

All my email addresses, every news site I go to: AMSOIL!!!! Be glad when that shit dies down.

Been using Mobil-1 in everything since the late seventies. I think it’s about the time it came out. There was a test done at the time where they ran a 460 Lincoln 100k miles on the Mobil-1, drained it and pulled the motor apart to look at wear. Reassembled with no new parts and put the same oil back in. Did the same at 200k, 300k, and 400k. That convinced my dad as he was putting 30-40k a year on cars.

Fast forward to my involvement in F1 Powerboat Racing. We were turning two stroke outboards 10-11k RPM sustained. With Dino we constantly fought piston scuff, and damage to chrome or Nikasil bore surfaces. We started bringing in full synthetic Liquimoly two stoke oil in from Germany (wasn’t available here then) and oiling issues went away.

I’m a traditionalist in many things, but I put full synthetic in everything.
