I love low cars. I think we all can probably agree that wheels, tires, and stance are the key. I'm certainly of the older crowd here and have nothing against juice or bags and don't want to start a s_ _ t show, but I just don't get the whole 'laying frame', broken look. I looked back at some older threads and would love to see some of the static drop stances you guys are driving. Here are some of mine currently. Thanks, Tim
I am with you. I think they look silly, impractical and I just don't get it. Some even have the wheels angled in when set down and look like they broke the axle. But, to each his own. I am sure there are lot of people out there who dislike traditional styled rods. Yours looks good. I see you are another fan of yellow cars.
With bags you can set the stance, the look and ride height you want. I'm pushing age 60 and still love them low.
Not even lowering blocks, just as it sits on springs and shocks. And I didn't have to raise the bed floor.
Low is cool. A bit of a forward rake is good (for me) too. Up and down and draggin the ground, well ... that's just all kinds of wrong., for me anyway.
I completely understand the pros of bags and even recently considered them for the rear of my wagon. But ended up with lowering springs and air shocks.
You ole farts that don't care for bags or dig the layin frame shtick are simply not on the lowdown cool! .....and, that pretty much includes me!! I don't get it either! But, just like comedy, we don't all laugh at the same things.
Yup, cars that are laying frame look broken to me.... Here is a 52 chev I built back in the eighties, cut coils, 54 uprights and stepped A arms up front and 3 inch blocks out back
thanks, I did the body and paint myself, also rebuilt the 54 235. I installed the headliner and carpet but had the seats and door panels tuck n rolled. I horse traded and junkyard scrounged for lots of it, I had 1100 bucks invested all done... oh the good old days!!!
I gotta agree, I don’t understand laying the frame on the ground. Looks like they have a fat girlfriend that has ruined the springs! I like low, but there is such a thing as too low in my eyes. When it becomes a chore to drive and low spots and high humps become obstacles like going through a mine field, it’s too low for me. Mark’s cars have that happy place for me, low enough to notice, high enough to safely drive on uneven roads without damage. Not everywhere do they have pool table smooth roads! Mine is on leaf springs. I like the tire to be about 1” or so away from the fender radius, with the entire tire showing. I played with sizes until I got the look I was going for and the ability to drive on any surface road. It’s perfect in my eyes, the only ones that matter to me. Some will like it, some won’t, and that’s ok.
My old ‘46. Dropped axle, flattened crossmembers, dearched, reversed eye springs, skid plate under the oil pan. It’s about as low as it will go and still able to drive. Heavy concentration on the road and proper navigation with driveways and dips. I’m constantly asked questions about the air bags (NOT) and why I don’t drive it with the bags aired up more. I just laugh and say that the stance separates the men from the boys. Thousands of miles and 41 years of chasing the white line proves it’s drivable. If sparks don’t fly, you’re too high!!!
The laying frame nonsense got started with the mini trucks and carried over. Springs on all 4 corners of my 48 that will set it at static height with inexpensive bags over the rear axle hooked to a Cadillac air pump and leveling switch that hooks to the axle to maintain that desired height when I load my road gear trip in the back or hook to the teardrop. It won't go any lower than the springs allow from the get go though.
Static drop for me... there's enough **** to wrong on a rig, I don't need to be bothered by air or hydraulics! KISA....Keep It Simple ***hole!
Man it is hard to believe with just a simple tire change you transformed the looks of that car! If I didn’t see it I would not have believed it.
Built this in 1982, drove back and forth from NJ all over the Midwest to Kustom shows. One trip, to Springfield MO, was 5000K miles round trip. Sits like this all the time.
Yes, they even had a magazine back in the day called S****E. When I was showing my lifted 4x4 years ago, I never understood those guys wanting to s****e the bottom of their truck on the road.
The previously posted picture of my '50 stance and a current shot after a few changes. Nothing huge. Originally with 14" rear tires, blocks and old springs out back and cut coils in front. Currently with 15" tires, new springs and frame notch in back and Aerostar cut springs in front. An ongoing project for sure.
Its pretty simple to me.........a vehicle of any kind has an "overall" look which includes its stance to accomplish that look. Sitting it on the ground just destroys that look. Its like looking at a beautiful model with great legs......and then cutting them off at the kneecaps. Ruins the whole proportions. I can understand using bags to adjust height when navigating a driveway hump and then returning to normal ........but just sitting it on the ground when parking destroys that overall stance which helps to define the car.
