Projects What!!? another 27 on 32 chassis!??. Scratch build body.

I was sent a picture the other day - body in primer.

 

Hello again. It's been a while. I had a lot happen over the last few years. Without boring you with my problems, I was put in a possition where I was overwhelmed with work after my employee let me down badly. I had no time for anything for a while. Then my youngest became extremely ill and required several surgeries. So for the last few years life has been a struggle. I worked on the car any chance I got but progress was sparodic. Last year my daughter was finally on the mend and I decided I should get my car done.

 

I finally got it on the road in the middle of last summer. I couldn't get it to run right and couldn't venture far for most of the summer but put a few hundred miles on it. It's running well now and I'm looking forward to going to lots of events this summer. I wanted to say thanks to everyone on here for your words of encouragement and for the help and advice a got from the good people on this site. I will post more information on the rest of the build as time permits be if people are still interested. The build took me far longer than I ever thought. Just wanted to tell you guys I managed to get it on the road. It's still not totally finished but it's on the road.

Had no idea you were facing so much hardship over the past couple of years Dave , especially with family matters , but good to hear that everything has worked out as well as it could for you , your family and your business. Hopefully al of that turmoil and worry is permanently behind you and everything is good for you from now on .

The car looks amazing, but thats no surprise given your level of skill and attention to detail . Would love to be able to see it out and about this year but im having a year off .. Maybe next year Looking forward to seeing some of the build updates.

Wow, you nailed that! I know only too well what overwhelm is like. I think it goes hand in hand with doing metal shaping for a living. Everyone I know in that line of work goes through stages of it. Labour intensive work + perfectionist + things don't always go to plan. I guess you know that, or you wouldn't call yourself Mindover. Enjoy your roadster!

Not a 27 but an aluminum 25. Track roadster with a 3/8 X 3/8 flathead. Hilborn F I. In/out box. 201 Halibrand. Schroeder steering. 2 X 4 X .083 frame rails. 90" W B.

 

My fiberglass 27 on fabricated rails. Dropped floor. 454 radiator in the back. 2 fans. Runs cool.

Hey David, you may not be "done", (they never are), but you have built a beautiful little hotrod here. Seems like our projects constantly get interrupted, but if you do something every time you can they get closer with each hour in the shop.

Just saw this thread . . . and it so happens I bought a might 27 roadster body last Spring. So, I'm researching all sorts of builds and your is an exceptionally nice one. Glad you got it on the road! If I can ever help you with anything flathead related, just drop me a CONVO. Take care . . .

Thank you it's really nice to see so many people who have been keeping up with my build and offering words of encouragement and advice still on here and better yet still interested in my build. I don't want to reply to each individual comment but I do want to say I really appreciate this site and the people on here. I have had nothing but help and genuinely good advice along with nice comments in the time I have been building this car.

 

Thank you, I'm glad you like the car. As you have seen I made the body along with almost everything else apart from the engine, gearbox, axles and brakes. I think I made just about everything twice but I got there in the end. I wired it myself and I was very happy when everything worked straight off!. I had trouble with it overheating and cutting out. Overheating was timing I think. The cutting out turned out to be the pressure regulator I used. It still has some small issues so I may take you up on your kind offer of advice. You said you bought a "might 27" ?.

 

The car drives really well, I have no issues, of course it rattles and bangs, but it has no "death wobble" and it steers and corners great. The chassis is quite ridged because of the '34 cross members in the narrow chassis. I have (almost) full lock which took a lot of re-doing and work. Only the rear kick up is boxed so it retains the traditional appearance. All in all I am very happy with it. I never intended to paint it but in the end I persuaded my brother to paint it for me. He has been a painter all his life but is way past retirement age so I have him to thank. I told him I wasn't looking for perfection and he did a good job without going over the top with the prep work. It's no show car. I intend to drive it a lot. I made a stainless steel fuel tank and many other parts since I was last on here so as I get a chance I will put up some build posts.

 

This shows the stainless steel petrol tank. Inside the trunk. Still a reasonable amount of space in the trunk.

 

David, first things first, it's good to hear your daughter is making progress with her health struggles. And it's always good to see your fine workmanship, an inspiration to us all.

 

I had managed to miss this build thread - glad I have found it. It looks a great car and I look forward to seeing it around some time.
