Hot Rods 57 FORD Build #2... Glutton for Punishment.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jeff Norwell, Oct 20, 2021.

  1. That 1st start up is always an adventure. Mine went very well except for the timing being quite a bit off. I had a couple of real pros holding my hand.

  2. Hey my last first start up? Resulted in a rod through the pan, be thankful for a couple fuel leaks! Haha!

Well... this weekend went well.. after 53 years.. life has breathed into this car.
Lots more to do but a big hurdle has passed.
I did some digging and research.. it is indeed a 1960 352 300 hp version.
It started on the first key..... a bit of timing is further required .... No Leakes.. no internal noise... no blowing oil... just nice and clean.
    Happy day.

    No.
I had the exhaust flanges machined flat and the mating header surfaces machined as well.. quite a while ago.
In addition to the reflex exhaust gaskets.... I wasn't concerned at all.

  8. so less so luck, lots more following the 5 Ps of engineering?

  9. Almost like doing it properly avoids problems.

  10. By golly, I did live long enough to see the day. :) I don't think I heard solid lifters. Are they in the engine?

  12. I think you need to stop posting your adventures...I'm getting inspired and I can't finish one project at a time! In all seriousness, your work is amazing and inspiring, and I LOVE your 57's! I had a close family friend buy me a 57 Meteor 2-door sedan when I was 15. I wanted to build it so bad, but my dad thought it was too much of a project and made me trade it for a 55 Customline 4-door. I don't think I've ever recovered from that!

I just realized how darn long this thread build was...I am either the slowest guy to work on a car or the slowest guy to learn about working on a car......
    Good Grief!

Jeff, rest assured you are not.
Our Nova (was supposed to be for my wife) was bought in 1983, just before we were married, it was driven less than 100 miles, has been on jackstands off and on ever since.
It's been 40 years since I've been able to call our Nova a "car", it's been a perpetual "project" all that time, albeit in more than one iteration, I guess that happens when a person follows the "trend of the week".
I really like the canvas you've chosen for this 57 model 300, if I was building a 57 Chevy 150, it would look very similar.

    Well...
Good Times,Bad Times and back on Good times.
So,... After firing this 352 Mystery engine. I was elated that it ran so well.Good Oil Pressure.. no clangs or Bangs... ran very strong. A nice 300 horse + engine. I felt this was really gonna be fun.
All was good and I now could see another hurdle was over with.

    Then disappointment,
The very next day I was along side the car, dropped a socket and rolled under the car.
Well.... grabbing the socket.I notice a big pool of oil dripping from the flywheel onto the shop floor.
    My heart sank.
After a day of yelling at the dog, kicking the cat..I just decided to lets get it done.I assumed it was a rear main seal that had dried out over time. This engine was sold to me, stating it was a rebuild from as 1960 T-Bird and the engine was rebuilt .. but the older gentleman passed and thats how I got it....
I pulled the engine the next day.

In the shop.I have a few FE's with a lot more muscle.... I have been having them built over time as back ups.(yea... some folks go on vacations...I spend money on engines)
So I chose one and started to prep it for installation.I will not be running a 2x4 Eddy intake... going with the 750 and 1960 Ford intake.

So after I pulled the engine... and suspecting a rear main seal...... The leak was not the engine.... but the input line for the throwout bearing.
All my fault..I didn't secure the lines well enough in the bell and when we fired... the one feed line got chewed and a pin hole through the inside sheath....
The engine had to come out regardless,.... so Pull ho!

A replacement line has been ordered... so, back to good times and now I am relieved.. and future plans are for a big HP improvement....

But I made my mind on this new FE.
New engine ,very fresh and has had dyno time.
Thats all I am saying about it.

So,... the Fight continues..... I should have all back together in a few weeks..... work is extremely heavy and free time is Like finding Amelia Airheart's Remains.....

    Have a great weekend

Not the worst thing in the world to yank and engine. Could be so much worse.

All of this is criminally great to look at. Glad work is busy for you, it's a great problem to have.

Well. the saving grace I assume Jay is it was better to happen now in the shop that some lonely country road. The reason I used the throw out bearing is that it was Free and brand new.(Scottish heritage creeps me constantly)
I have used them in the past and have had zero issues.
Saying that.. this was totally my error.... Hahahaha

Is the hydraulic setup supposed to be an improvement over the mechanical linkage? Seems like more problems can crop up with leaks, chaffed hoses, bleeding….

  25. Bugger! Sounds like some of my toe stubbers.
“Glutton for Punishment” takes on a deeper meaning.
Even if you had to use the 352 the fix seems rather simple, just replace the line(?).
It’s all the friggin’ labor and time of doing the crap over. It really wears on me at 77.
Sounds like it will be good in the end.

My O/T 2008 Ford Escape has a hydraulic throwout bearing and I just rolled over 263,000 miles today without ever once touching it. If there is an issue with a hydraulic TO bearing, I would have to say it's in application not in principle.

Wow, just wow. I recall as a kid going to model car shows and being blown away at the level of detail in the builds. Jeff is out there building it in real life. Subtle, distinct, and oh so classy. This has been such a joy to read and live through...as always, excellent work sir!

Nice job on the fuel lines. What is the bolted to the fender apron with the HM brass plate?
