I like them low, but laying frame seems like something is broken. I don't hate it but I don't prefer it. I think good stance has more to do with how the tire looks in the wheel well.
It’s kinda like this for me. I don’t care for gasers. They look goofy. So I know when people say my low beater looks odd how they feel. I got anyone’s back that build gassers. I get the build what you like part of it. So I guess I wonder why people don’t understand the low lows are doing the same thing. I live in rural Al. I drive my low crap without issue. Front bumper on my bus is 4 inches off the ground. Around 14 inches worth of drop. Doing the same with a step van My merc will be low in the back. and I have an OT with a body drop. Laying frame is fine with me if that’s what you dig. All mine are static. If it drags it drags. I’ve ridden in plenty of large wheel low profile tire vehicles that ride and handled great. We built a couple adjustable setups that looked great aired out or cruising. Drove even better. The bus is nose down, the OT is level, the Merc is being set up as a taildragger. I’m slowly convincing my wife to have her 56 low. If my son trades me his c40 flatbed, he knows it will also get dropped. Some folks just like low. Just like others like what they like. It ain’t rocket surgery
Here's another way to look at it. Lucky we're not all the same and get off on exactly the same things. That would make for an extremely boring time...... I know where I like my "low". It's up to you to work out where you all like yours.......
^^^^yep. I’ve never thought about asking why folks like lifted drag cars. I guess they built what they liked. I’m good with that.
The stepdown Hudson. Of course unibody to allow the floor to be lowered into the body structure but still keep the inside space comfortable for passengers. What was important in those days was roof clearance so men and women could get into and out the car without removing their hats. The Hudsons looked low, especially the roof line without compromising space. Then custom car guys come along and take it one step further like me.
I'm just a-skeered I'll be tooling along 60mph+ and come up on a raised man hole cover !! I play dodge ball... steering around sunken man holes and pot holes now ...and I'm in my parts chaser pick up !! 6sally6
I raked the fuck out of one of my cars and loved the look but hated driving it enough that I returned it to near-stock ride height. The amount of undercarriage damage I caused daily driving that thing, I don't know how anyone really drives them. Mad respect to the guys that can put up with it, I couldn't hang.
Manyolcars says there's a bunch of rat rodders and mini truckers here, but from what I've learned in my 4 years here, is the overwhelming majority of hamb members are street rod people or restoration minded. Not hot rodder's, and not custom car people.
The thing i learned is that the majority call an unfinished car a rat. It's not. Flat black paint and red wheels doesn't make it a rat. I rat is not one specific make/ model/ brand. It's a plethora of left over parts. So yeah, a lot of my shit gets called rat rods. I don't give a shit. I build my style because it's what I want. I'm not trying to impress others because my cock is small.
Wish I could give you 10 likes for that! I’m an out of the box guy. Who else would hot rod an old Lincoln? My car is low, but it’s sitting on stock suspension in front, sagging spring? Maybe. You can see the entire tire in the fender, about an inch gap all around. Low enough it sometimes scrapes the exhaust, but high enough the oil and trans pans clear everything. It’s not original, it’s not super customized, but it’s fun! That’s more important to me than following a guideline or era.
Oh well, I'm tucking tire and still drive everywhere and haul shit... All depends on how its built and how its driven, but I beat on this gal alot.
looks to me like someone stole the springs out of it. That's what I say, too In the experimental days, they found that lifting drag cars helped traction. Later they found other ways to get traction without lifting them. But the lifted ones looked really badass at the time (50+ years ago), and it's neat to get the look of a time when experimentation was still a thing. Not for everyone...but it is also neat when that copy of an obsolete design still goes fast! yeah, whatever they wanna do.....
You're funny, I'm close to 60 too and the top photo is how my truck looked when I first bought it at 25 and drove it a year like that before cutting it up into what it looks like today LOL
Perfect stance. I think what they are taking about here initially is those that are on bags, c notched, inner fenders removed, laying on the ground at the show. I have never put airbags on any of my personal stuff. I'm like anthony, if it drags it drags. Love your old truck man
I get all the history stuff. If you dig the look, wear it out. I’m your biggest fan. Kinda looks like a swamp buggy with wore out mud tires to me. So I get the low looking like it’s broke or someone stole the springs. I dig that stollen spring look. Some dig the swamp buggy look I’m good with em all.
Has advantages. I made the mistake of putting a fuel filter on a frame once. Hard to change on the side of the road when the ride is 5-6 inches off the ground. Moved it under the hood. Problem solved.
My opinion,...... whatever on cars like lead sled type cars etc,....... But pickup trucks lowered too low, sitting on the ground, I really dislike. In my opinion are stupid looking, are useless, and hacked up and ruined a otherwise nice truck IMHO .
Maybe most pictures are with them low because that's their main thing. I'm sure most people here know that they air up. I'm a bit reluctant to post this video, but it does show various ride heights in action in less than 5 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=sW7gBJJhm0A
Mine doesn't have locking hubs, but it is a 4x4! That is ride height with unmodified suspension with full suspension travel. The sheet metal is pretty low. I'm growing pretty fond of em being channeled. Still can't reach the center 6" of the roof though.
LOL! Not at my place. No chopping going on here. I guess maybe reaching that center 6" of the roof are not that important to me...
