Lap belts only are a sure way to drive your face into the dash IMO .

I removed the photo of mine here because one of the experts said they not are sewn right. Guess I’m just going die: like I didn’t for 79 years in cars with bias ply tires, single master cylinders, drum brakes, no air bags, crumple zones, etc…

Simpson used to have a re-webbing & re-cert program. I know Impact still does.

    3 Quick tales
    B cause
*3 weeks I had my license, my cousin jumps into Dad's 11 yr old '53 Ford.
At my street's end I Swing a U-turn ( bad striker plates ) Her ass slides off the seat and out she goes, throwing her hands down to break the impact of the street, she gets the door ( because I nailed the brakes ) thrown at her face on rebound.
Sure Dad and I had previously installed a belt set from Pep Boys'
*Decades later I took a chrome spoke Superior wheel in the chest, without the belt.
*Another 8 years and bad tires, on a rainy Friday, gave me the thrill of a rollover, 'sans-a-belt'
To this day my back injury will cause me to sit down.
Thank you atch and all for comments.
TODAY, I can't leave the driveway without tieing in.

Would you rather that or take your chances flying through the windshield into oncoming traffic?

Wesco Performance has a good selection of seat belt options and colors. I've used their stuff many times.

I vividly remember taking a turn on Niles Canyon Rd under the rail road over crossing WAY to fast for my car (56 chevy) and my teenage driving skills. No belt, sliding across the seat losing control of steering and braking. I probably would have still totaled the car, but that put an indelible memory on why a seat belt would have been helpful. As a side note, after coming to a stop on the wall, my passenger still had a lit joint in his hand.

I used seat belts from a Miata simply because I had them available and they worked.

Flipped my 56 chev ( barrel rolled) then end over end down a ravine 58 years ago , it was serious , then I followed my grandfathers advice & didn't turn my brain off any longer ! Amazing how that works

It's amazing how many people think they are smarter than one of the simplest and most effective automotive safety devices we have.

A lap belt is better than flying about unsecured, in the majority of cases. If you fly from the vehicle and your outcome is better than being attached to it, you were very lucky.

I had a coworker die in front of my house in this very way. 70-something F100 with lap belts (he always wore) was hit head on by an 80s something full-size GM. It hit so hard that there was a foot-and-a-half gap between the truck cab and bed. Joe's head bent the steering wheel against the dash.

Every old car I've owned since then had shoulder belts or a harness.

Put in shoulder belts if you can, lap belts other wise.

Yeah, mine are garbage too but I will leave it up as a reminder to others. I am no expert on seat belts but, I will post this from Juliano's website before everyone starts replacing theirs.

"We sell only seat belts that have been thoroughly tested to meet or exceed all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). All of our seat belts are made by US companies using the highest quality foreign and domestic materials."

Impressed that you feel qualified to pass judgement , you feel they're necessary , I don't , simple difference of opinion .
It's a matter of doing your best to stay out of situations where you need safety devices .

We've strayed a bit off topic here but to add to the current discussion...

The most likely scenario for me and any of my cars is that I hit a deer. They're extremely active in my area and despite my very best efforts I have tangled with a few of them. A shoulder belt will keep my chest off of the steering wheel in that event, and my passenger's head from contacting the windshield.

Plus, it feels kinda race-y to strap into the car to go for a drive. Adds to the vibe, at least, for me it does.

  26. Actually seat belts (lap belts) are very traditional. You see them in a ton of old hot rods that were in the magazines of the period. A lot of the "street rods" of the era moon lighted at drag strips or land speed and seat belts were required pretty early on.
It's the general public that didn't adopt them real well, I mean Nash got lap belts in 1949 and volvo made the 3 point in 1959. I remember my father (RIP) telling me in 1964 he was buying a loaded grand prix at the dealership and the salesman was telling him how to remove the optional belts lol.
    How times have changed.

On my personal cars I bought 60+ seat belts from Holley's brand "scott drake" when they were closing them out (as of a few weeks ago the still had some for as low as 3 bucks a belt so its probably worth looking on Holleys website). They all were airplane style with the lift up latch that is chrome plated. They look great well at least as far as a seat belt can look good. Anyways I figured that I have driven old cars my entire life and knock on wood I have never gotten hurt but I have had a lot of close calls (mainly from other drivers) and now in my mid 40s I don't worry about my driving so much but living in so. Cal I am always in traffic and everyone is on their phone or now using the self driving junk so it was probably time for seat belts

Well, I don’t whether their necessary, but they are effective. Staying out of situations simple isn’t in your control. It’s either your day or it isn’t.

  29. You know that photo/video (here is the link if anyone hasn't seen it ) was sort of BS and was misleading at best but honestly to me it seems down right dishonest as it has some flaws or questionable things that statistically don't tent to happen real often.
First they used a GM X frame GM vehicle then they deliberately hit it in its weakest area in an off center edge hit to miss the front bumper structure that would have transformed the crash energy to the frame. The NHTSA deliberately grazed the corner sheet metal where there was no structure to show how good the 2009 Impala way compared to a 1959. By that same rationale the NHTSA used they could have been physics in action lesson just buy taking the 1959 GM car and running it squarely into the back of the 2009 Impala at 60ish MPH and it would have killed anyone that was in the back seat (a much more likely scenario since rearend accidents are the most common collision especially at speed).
I ask why did they use a 1959 car that had an inherent weakness and not use a vehicle with a perimeter frame or a 1959 Rambler to show the accident you know that had seat belts and a car body that was designed to crush a bit for safety? Why did they clip just the corner and not do a full on head on collision? As I said it was misleading at best.
Now that being said nee cars are definitely safer generally speaking but seat belts have time and time again in all eras and vehicles have been proven to save lives. It's Einstein physics in action. By being properly belted into the car the energy is transferred into the car through the belt mounting points. Now you hav eto have properly mounted belts but when they are you won't keep moving forward when the car comes to an unexpected sudden stop.

It's unfortunate that you think it's an opinion that seat belts prevent severe outcomes.

(Granted the information below is based on three-point seat belts, but the stats still apply)
