Other than ratio what are the differences between the 28 and 36 Ford rear axels? Looking at a 36 for a 28. Nick
The bearings also interchange but the ring and pinion are smaller as well as the carrier. The drive shaft is one solid shaft. I've built two flathead powered Model A's with stock rear ends and the only problem I've had is shearing the axle keys and they are the same size up to 1948
IMO you sheared the axle keys, because the nut was NOT tight enuff !!!! Put a wrench on it , slip a long pipe on the wrench, then stand on the pipe, even bounce if you can. There, that might do it!!! Taught to me by my 85 year old friend, when I was 25. I be 80 the 17th.
The wishbone mounts are different for the different years so you'll have to get that sorted for your A. 1928-1931 have the spring over the axle and 1932-1936 had the spring mounted behind the axle 1928-1931 wishbones all mount to the same bolts on the flanges as the backing plates and are interchangeable (though 1931 have different, forged ends) 1932-1934 wishbones bolt to the bottom of the axle and the spring mounts to arms on the back of the tubes 1935-1936 wishbones bolt to the axle (diff mounts than 1932-1934) and the spring bolts to arms off of the wishbones
My '29 Sedan in my Avatar is running a Model A rear end with a 59ab and '39 trans since 1958. Not broke yet! Dave
I'm 74 and been playing with early ford stuff since the late 60's, when I sheared the axle key it also twisted the axle and had to replace the axle. I always torque the axle nut and retorque after 50 or so miles. I pulled the hub and replaced the key and couldn't get the hub back on since the key slot wasn't straight. Kind of hard to tell but the key slot is slightly twisted.
