  1. 1/16" would be enough, and easier to work. You could go even thinner, I've used .040" aluminum. The trick is not deforming it too much while cutting it out. One of those cheap Chinese pneumatic 'nibblers' works well on thin material, just go slow and easy, finish up with a file. Use a light smear of silicon sealer between the intake and the spacer.

I’ve got one of those nibblers somewhere I don’t use it much as it leaves little bits everywhere! I’ll dig it out.

I don't know how I missed this thread. Love the look of this car. Especially the tail lights and rear styling. Glad to see the car getting the appropriate attention and a new life.

I’m loosing the will to live with this carb.
How hard can it be to get a gasket that fits. Ordered one for a Mustang that had a 4100 as stock and this is what I get.
    IMG_6398.jpeg

And the spacer has been cast by a blind monkey on LSD! IMG_6399.jpeg

Does anyone know of a gasket that works with a 4100 Autolite carb?

  5. That's the way the OEM parts look... Those will work just fine.

IMG_6398.jpeg The radius on the top of the bores is such that it won’t actually seal on the carb bores.

There will be a leak here.

Building an FE over there reminds me of the summers I spent in Yorkshire , my cousin Andrew had an 390 powered stock car built on a Bedford van chassis. His Dad was the local vicar and he constantly had that thing blown apart in the driveway of the vicaridge:D

Back to the two steps forward one step back thing.
The new crank damper just slips on the crank

    IMG_6409.jpeg

I can’t see that being a good thing. It’s surely just going to eat the snout of the crank over time.

If I'm not mistaken they are pretty much a slip fit, they just seem a little tight when they've been on for years. Im sure someone with more FE experience will chime in

I spoke to the manufacturer, they’re supposed to be an interference fit. Going to see if I can find some one with a bore gauge small enough to measure it and then feed back to them.

Damper bore seems to be 1-2 thou oversize based on the manufacturer’s specs. I’ve emailed Summit to see if they’ll do anything.

Engine shop is waiting for valve guides, so come to a stop on the engine.

    IMG_6427.jpeg

Moved on to the shocks, got one front off. Looks like an original, there’s absolutely no compression damping left in it all. Would’ve been interesting on the brakes! The top sheered off the other one so gave up on that for the evening.

Cleaned the exhaust manifolds up and gave them a lick of paint.

  20. I used POR15 exhaust manifold paint on my car... baked at 400 F in the oven, it has held up pretty well.

This is same sort of thing. I used to have a huge oven, like the range ones but with just one door. You could get a whole gearbox case in! Have just got a normal one now, don’t think they’ll fit. It’ll probably just burn off on initial run up anyway.

If I can save up some money, next year I’ll treat it to some of the Kugel manifolds.

Gave the engine bay a clean and painted the front of the chassis whilst the engine is out.

Summit have told me the crank damper is ok to use which I think is bollocks, loose is loose. I've measured the crank OD at 1.3750" (which is within the factory spec) the new damper from Summit measures at 1.3765". So going to see if I can find another one in the UK.

Shipping is expensive for that weight. Also learned that the 427 style damper won’t fit my car without moving the dynamo. So the old one is going back on for the moment.

Cleaned and painted the original damper, I’ll reference the inner to the outer when the paint is dry just to keep an eye on things.
    IMG_6513.jpeg

Started to get the intake together, smoothed any casting flash in the ports a little, fitted plugs to the exhaust crossover and started to work out the position of the heater pipe and PCV valve. I need to put a rocker cover on and the expansion tank to be sure about the heater elbow and make a plate to bolt onto the PCV hole.
    IMG_6515.jpeg

Also need to find some studs to bolt the carb down, who puts a fine thread in aluminium!!??
