I'm replacing my intake after the 292 rebuild but their are two different length bolts .I heard if you put the wrong length bolts in the wrong vhole you could damage a pushrod.Whatbolts go where? Thanks

It's not the intake hold down bolts that can connect with a pushrod, it is the bolts located in the rear of the head that holds the bracket for wires on the left side and the bracket that hold the plug wires on the right side.

Of the two different length bolts, I believe the front intake bolts are a different length from the rear of the intake. I don't remember which is which but I think the rear one are longer (if I remember correctly).

I ran across this today while searching for head bolts for my '54 239 engine.

    Ford Y Block Head Bolts 239, 256, 272, 292 & 312 CI Engines - Cl***ic Thunderbird Club International (ctci.org)

One of the most common errors made while installing cylinder heads on a Ford Y block engine is installing the head bolts in the wrong position. The lower row of bolts near the spark plugs are all the same size 7/16”-14 X 2.13”, five each head and ten per engine. The long bolts under the rocker arms were the same length through 1955, 7/16”-14 X 4.06” five each head and ten per engine.
The problem did not exist until the 1956 model year at which time three different lengths of bolts were used; the five short bolts near the spark plugs remained the same 7/16’- 14 X 2.13. The three bolts in the center under the rocker shaft remained the same 7/16”-14 X 4.06”. The two bolts on the end of each head are longer 7/16”-14 X 4.32” for 1956 until the end of production of the Y block engine. These longer bolts must always be installed on the ends of the cylinder head. If they are misplaced and installed in the center area they will bottom before they tighten properly, resulting in a blown head gasket. If the shorter bolts (7/16”-14 X 4.06) are installed at the end of the heads they can strip before reaching their specified torque requirements.

I can't find any head bolts for my engine. I've tried every source I know of. Does anyone have knowledge of where I might find them?

I think John Mummert still sells them.

Okay, on the Y-Block the heads are interchangeable from side to side. There are two bolt holes in the head for the intake manifold that are used by the manifold on the front of the engine but end up with nothing attached (nothing covering the holes) at the rear of the engine. These bolt holes need to have two very short bolts inserted to plug the holes otherwise there will be a leak to the crankcase for vapor to escape. It won't be a big leak of oil, just a constant mist and smell of burning oil. I will attach a couple pictures of where these bolts go (bolts are in the holes in the pictures), if you install a bolt that's very long it will hit the push rod and cause damage. The manifold attaches with two different length bolts BUT it is pretty obvious where they go, if you insert a bolt and the head sticks up about 1/2 inch before you tighten it down it is probably the correct bolt. Hope this makes sense. Mark IMG_1092.JPG 20200512_115053.jpg

The question was on intake bolts, not head bolts

Guilty of off topic. However, I found a source for the head bolts I've been searching for. Thanks.
