I think you're fine with your rear suspension mount. Look at aftermarket frames and how they connect to ladder bars with small diameter round tubing. If you are worried about your design and want to sleep better you could stiffen it a shit ton as shown below with some plate.
It's funny, after it was suggested to triangulate more, I went out and made a cardboard template and taped it in the area to the right that you drew. I may do that, but I want to think about other things like exhaust locations etc. before I block that area, or maybe I could incorporate my exhaust hanger into that gusset...hmmm
What you're really doing is strengthening the frame with those four "extra" pieces of square tubing. There is no real need to have those front/rear pieces (that come off of your new radius-rod mount.). The radius rods are primarily trying to apply force up or down (due to axle wind-up during acceleration or braking), not forwards or backwards. If you want, you can leave the two 90 degree front pieces, but even those two are not really needed. Also, I would typically make a 2 little 1/8" thick "boxing plates" to mount the cross-member to - such that you can tack everything in place, then remove the cross-member and do a full 360-degree weld where it meets the plates, then reinstall and weld the plates to the frame (top and bottom). I like to "step box" the plates in a bit - about 1/4 to 3/8" in on each side - so you have some good original frame material to weld too (and not on the corner). This also leaves a space behind the plate for fuel lines (if needed), wiring, etc..
Welded up the torque arms today. Made from leftover’40 Ford front wishbone legs. Added the bung and clevis to attach them to the rear radius rods. next I’ll make a plate to attach these to the banjo
Got my pedals figured out. Had the body on and off 3 times this weekend to be sure. Also pulled the engine back out and separated the transmission from the engine so I could get a look at the clutch. I’ll have to post the pics later. Too big.
So, better pics from yesterday. Pulled everything from the chassis. Separated the engine and transmission (easy). Also removed the clutch and pressure plate from the flywheel. Now I need to figure out if I have the pressure plate and clutch plate rebuilt or replace them, and WHO can do that work. Cheers!
Got my steering box mount completed and tacked in place. Hope to get the pedal assembly tacked in tomorrow.
Slow progress on the torque arms. Got a spark in my eye last weekend that I had to have removed. Safety glasses AND a full face shield didn’t work. Getting back on the horse today.
When you go to DMV take along an old photo of an A converted to at PU with a wood box in place of the trunk lid. Explain it had been re converted back to a car when the family sold the farm....... Make sure a number on the frame or engine matches the title. If not get a bill of sale for the number that;s there and go for a whole new registration. CA will probably stick a state VIN on it but it doesn't matter much on old cars.
Picked up an old gas tank for the roadster yesterday. Not sure what it’s from. Vent, fill, and gauge on the top. Line on the bottom. Cap boss has three bumps on the OD no threads. Seller said it was model T but I’m not so sure. Any help would be appreciated. The gauge seems to move freely when I tilt the tank. It’s 30” long, 10” tall, and 16” wide… Any ideas?
A bit more detail on the mystery tank. I was able to remove the gauge and also saw that there is a pickup tube going down to the bottom of the tank.
Is it possible it's from some agriculture equipment? It's super cool either way, hopefully somebody recognizes it.
Not a lot of progress lately as work has me all over the world these days. I did get more done on the torque arm, and cleaned up and painted the gas tank. Still don’t know what it’s from, but that’s irrelevant. Should get the steering box mount welded in today as well. I’m off for the next week so hoping to make some good progress. I’ll post pictures later when I’m on my laptop. Phone is bitching at me
Great idea! I had some time getting the last of them out of the tank...chain would have been easier. Picked up a clutch equalization bar, anti-chatter rods, and a later model E-brake (under dash) assembly at the swap meet today. Good times.
Last Sunday, I bought a clutch equalizer rod at the Petaluma swap meet. Yesterday and today I modified another ball and mounted it to the frame. Looks like it will do the job.
Also got my new tank float. Attached to the lever arm with a small lock washer. Seems really secure. And I cleaned up the gauge and painted the indicator red.
While waiting for more parts, I fabbed up a couple of tank mounts. I’ll put some kind of webbing on them and straps with clamps across the top. Still need to finish welding them and give them a coat of paint
