Yep! Had to make room for the front mounted distributor...

Back in 1976 when I owned one, It never dawned on me to take some footage of it running. The sound clip would be great to revisit. That was before video cameras and all of the 8mm stuff I knew about had no audio. Technology certainly has made preserving history easier.

 

Oh,,the sound you say....

 

J Hansen, mine was in a dragster so the noise of the timing chain and the rest of engine sounds was what I liked best. I would rev it to 7 grand and the sound was very unique. If I remember correctly, the racers were turning them 8 grand with the LeMans rods in them. That's why the rod bearings were replaced quite often.

 

That will rattle your neighbors windows.....

 

12 to 1 compression ratio. Has a nice pop to it at idle.

J Hansen, I like that but the sound you are hearing is the nitro and the blower. Off topic comment: The best and worst thing I ever did was run a top fuel car for a year and a half. I found nitro to be as addictive as anything I had ever been around. I have a gallon jug of nitro in the garage. Every now and then, I open it and take a whiff. Goofiness. Old memories last a long time.

 

I’d be tempted to try some nitromethane in my push mower. What’s the worst thing that could happen?

This video has been around awhile but just the same I wanted to post it. Ed Pink certainly figured out the SOHC 427 to work well and practical. Well, if you don't count the dollars, that is. He explains a bunch here.
