  5. Not a lot to report this weekend but We got our tire sizes figured out and the frame sitting roughly where it needs to be. I flipped the wishbones and pie cut them to get the caster set.

  6. With our wedding coming up in three weeks and not a whole lot of time in the future to devote to the car, we decided to get to a nice stopping point this weekend to keep motivation high.
First I needed to get the transmission crossmember fabbed up.

Just like the engine mount, the trans mount will also get gusseted for strength in the future.
With the engine and trans sitting in the frame, I was able to figure out the rear end angle and get the spring hangers tacked on.

Next was to do a little cutting of the subframe to account for the frame step. My dad gave me a hand with this to speed the process up. 57A7B08C-3540-4448-93BD-F72D9ACCA44D.jpeg

  7. With the rear floor cut out and the subframe trimmed, we lifted the body onto the frame. 9DB937FF-43B7-4A60-90BA-CDF7433A47F4.jpeg

The firewall needs to be trimmed so its a couple inches too far back and as a result the body is about an inch too high in the rear, but overall we are super happy with the way its shaping up. Since this project is going on hold for a bit, having it in this state looking like a real hotrod will keep us motivated in the future when we finally have time to mess with it again. Thanks for following along!

  9. Man how time flies, but we’re back from Hiatus.
I got the rear subframe trimmed and the firewall cut out to put the body where it needs to be.
    IMG_8279.jpeg IMG_8280.jpeg IMG_8281.jpeg
I then started to rework the firewall to clear the engine.

When the body comes off I will get the pieces fitting right and tacked in.

  10. Time to make some rear body mounts to tie the subframe back together.
    IMG_8309.jpeg IMG_8310.jpeg IMG_8311.jpeg IMG_8313.jpeg IMG_8312.jpeg

  11. Body pulled off and set aside for now.
    IMG_8493.jpeg
Then on to beefing up the transmission crossmember
    IMG_8496.jpeg IMG_8497.jpeg IMG_8498.jpeg
Thats all for now. The engine and trans come out next so I can finish the motor mount, boxing plates and miscellaneous frame stuff.

You did a great job matching the sub frame to the frame.

    Thanks,

Great project! Coming along very nicely! Curious to see how you mount your pedals and master cylinder since I'm building something very similar.

  18. With the engine out, I flipped the frame over to get some of the underside squared away. First I finalized my wishbone mounts and got them welded on. IMG_8506.jpeg
Next I decided it was time to make templates and get my front boxing plates cut out. I brought them out just past the wishbone mounts. I really love the look of inset boxing plates, to me it gives it a more factory-ish look versus flush boxing plates. I also punched some holes in them because racecar. IMG_8515.jpeg

I think the next item on the list is the very important task of cleaning my workspace

Did you use some type of rubber mount for the transmission, or is it bolted directly to the cross member? Thx.

  25. Well, as usual life gets crazy and projects go on hold once again. We welcomed our daughter 2 months ago and between figuring out how to be parents and building our house ourselves, time and money has been tight! But Ive been finding time here and there to get some work done.
    IMG_7383.jpeg
The more I thought about the car, the more unhappy I was with the ride height. I kind of took the easy way out with a basic frame step and spring-on-top setup, and the existing model A crossmember wasn't in very good shape and would need lots of work to fix. The frame will now get a Z, spring-behind rear setup and a flat front crossmember.
After getting the frame tacked to the table, we cut the front crossmember out and put some pie cuts in it. IMG_0141.jpeg

Fixed the nasty hole in the front crossmember.

I acquired a set of 36 rear wishbones from a friend, but still waiting for a few more odds and ends. Hopefully I’ll be updating soon with some more progress.

Congratulations on the lil future hot rodder :D

The hot rod is looking good, we often make decisions because the path is more straightforward but as a result miss out on what 'coulda' been, good on you for chasing your goals

When you flattened the front cross member, did you have to cut more off the back side to clear the crank pulley?
