One morning in the late 60s I stepped out the door to go to work, still not fully awake and in disbelief when I noticed a bowling pin holding up the rear of my car. The rear wheels and tires were gone. After replacing them and still in the possession of the bowling pin. we re-enacted the crime. It only took the two of us to lift the car enough to get the pin under the bumper. By letting the air out of the tires and removing the lugs, the wheels pulled off with little effort. My buddy still has the bowling pin. Another time coming out of work with a co-worker, we get to the parking lot and his car had nothing under it, all 4 wheels and tires were gone, the hood was on the roof and the engine and trans. were gone. Yeah, I would say you have just been lucky.
Totally agree with you, Bud. I love the look of slammed rods, but anyone can tell most all can't be driven on the nation's shitty streets. I guess the photos are taken, then the owners adjust the level so they can be actually driven. Physics vs style, physics wins EVERYTIME ! Happy motoring.
I knew Squirrel could make sense out of all this high/low shit. He is a veteran of more shit than most of us on the HAMB have ever experienced. GO, Squirrel, GO !
You took what I said very much out of context to fit your narrative. That isn't at all what I was saying.
You have the cool factor and then you air up the bags and you can drive it comfortably. Not sure what is useless about that. That seems the definition of useful.
it's just a fad trend,... anyone here remember the fab to put long shackles on the rear leaf spring??? then the 10'' wide rims with n50's... they handled like crap and tires rubbed all the time... but it was cool.. my son went through body drop trend... his lic place... drgsbdy
I had 2 trucks I dropped 3 inches but no air bags if it's lowered just drive don't be a candy ass to have to raise to challenge a speed bump. Both were my work trucks 91-S-10 and a 98-f150 both were fun and handled well .I'm a carpenter and both were full of tools with hard tonneau covers.
Listen, I'm not a fan of cars PARKED on their rockers, but obviously they lift them up to drive. I don't care if anyone uses static drop, juice, or airbags, or even air shocks to get their car where they want it. Some cars look great a little higher, some look better a little lower, but that is purely my personal taste. You do you, boo.
I expect that there are a whole lot of people doing various things (that I would not do) to cars who are having a lot of fun and hurting no one. Where's the crime in that?
This is a good 'ol thread, but I've always been under the impression of whatever floats your carb... I grew up working not far from Watson's shop, and his t-bird was the start of something big. But I have never had a lowered car, it still doesn't stop me from respecting them. In fact, it seems that the low riders are some of the best fabricators/modifyers that we have going to date, except for what goes on here. Some of the custom cars from the 50s and 60s were exceptional, and growing up surfing during the rat fink era was cool, for me. I'm also a big Von Dutch fan, but not a fan of his theme on nazi-ism. And let's be honest, Barris was on the top of the world during the 60s, making all those odd cars for TV shows, but by the time I was out of high school in the 70s, it was like a ghost town covered with dust in his showroom off Cahuenga Blvd. I like original looking cars and trucks, but my truck is far from original. Does that make me, or even the guy that doesn't like original right or wrong? Absolutely not. Everyone is right in this game.
