Just went to the mailbox and there was the first Hot Rod Quarterly, Spring edition. At just a glance this issue is mostly about the old Pro Street movement. Not very exciting for me. Hope there's better things to come?

Bitterly disappointed. I had a distaste for Pro Street forty years ago, and my opinion hasn’t changed.

I usually hang onto magazines, but this one’s going in the recycling Monday evening when we set the cans out on the curb.

    I’m seriously underwhelmed.

Kinda, it appears to be a history of Pro Street. I don't know why they chose to start with the old Pro Street movement but they did. I too am dissapointed but I am hoping that they will also be including earlier Hot Rod history in future issues. On the positive side the magazine is nicely done, 100 pages and nice sharp photos. Frieburger has taken it upon himself to bring back Pro Street with a with a late 60's Nova build. It has drag week stuff too but includes a nice feature on the old Moon dragster and the Dos Palmas Machine special gas dragster from the 60's as well as current power tour recaps. They are still trying to be all things to all people!

Got mine yesterday; I hope there are no vans.

  7. I got mine in the mail today also. Frankly I think it's a dud. I got tired of Pro-street umpteen years ago. It was a fad that burned brightly for a time but I don't miss it.

I have been saying Pro Street was on its way back for a couple of years. Might have to actually go buy an issue for the first time in like 15 years.

I’d have to say the publication itself is nice, just was disappointed in the content. Basically the whole issue dedicated to pro-street.

  10. Finn, don't pitch it, it's a first issue, a collector item.
Got mine today also, hopin for some good (better) content next time.
it's a nice quality glossy mag, but I was let down by this first issue.
did like the article on Sullivan, here's his 54.
most HAMbers won't like this one.

IMHO, they blew it. Rodder’s Journal wanna be. I personally never liked the pro stock era. Those of you that do will love this issue. Maybe they’ll have a whiskey issue of just traditional hot rods in the future but I liked it better when there was a mix of builds, if you don’t like one, there’s another one to enjoy. Print is so much trouble they’re throwing a Hail Mary. It missed as far as I’m concerned.

I did not like prostreet when it was popular, and like less now.

I think the gnrs show had a whole section of pro street cars I would assume the coverage is related.

Got mine today, what I see will lead to me not renewing the subscription. Sad to see them resort to using old material for the first issue.

Yea one building was devoted to Pro Street cars even had a few of what would be considered the pioneering cars from the beginning of the trend.

Got my issue yesterday and thumbed through it. Too many cars with tall crap sticking out of the hood, small penus syndrome.

The only thing worth reading was the gas dragster coverage by Tony Thacker. The next issue will be the one that proves or disproves the quarterly issue concept. The ad count was anemic and I'd bet money that they cut some deals to even get those ads. Doubtful if we ever see any HOT ROD magazines with a 2025 cover date. RIP

Pro street was kool. For a moment. The jabs about old content? Isn't that an oxymoron in real time, on a site dedicated to old content? Tell me true that you take a knee to every car ever published in TRJ. Like every trend it will eventually go too far. Multi-million dollar street rod builds, wretched excess pro touring builds, gasser madness, rodents to cartoon-level insanity, and pro street was not immune to that. Jeez boyz n girls, yer a tuff crowd. Do we hate the game or the players here? No, never had a pro street car and I'm not all in on em but I don't see a need to dis the whole gig. I always thought an ultimate version woulda had less tire than most and could actually do the "work" it looked like it could. There was once an OT car that closely fit that ideal at the 1985 Hot Rod Magazine Supernationals. It was a Mopar called "Jumpin Black Flash" that was running a blown and injected 426 on alky. His pals tagged along in a pickup hauling plenty of methanol to feed the beast. On Sat the water cooler talk said he got popped at over 130 on Shadeland the night before in a street race. Didn't see him nor the car till Sat afternoon so who knows. Embrace it, we chose this life, enjoy the variety, or write a letter to HRM and tell them flathead powered black Deuce hiboys only.

    Player? Game? Conundrum.

Got mine yesterday. Boring. Even the front cover. Will not renew my sub. Too old for Pro Street. Bring back Hot Rod Deluxe.

I spent most of the late 80s building pro-street cars because it pair very well. I built my own version of a pro-street car in 1989. it was a 65 Marlin back halved and tubbed with a big old rat motor in it. I sold it two years ago to my grand daughter. While I had it I drove it 48000 miles. sometimes in the rain, once in the snow. I drove it as far south as Tennessee, as far north as Michigan, and as far west as Missouri. Ever Pennsylvania one time. It never failed me once. It even won an award on a Hot rod Power Tour. And it got 15 to 16 MPG with dual quads doing it. I still borrow it now and then just for old time sake. 33 years. Old School

I will stick to collecting little pages.
