Projects 1962 Biscayne Jr Stocker for the Street Build

    Check. I have also added braces from the frame to the crossmember as can be seen in post 157 of this thread.

    The original upper control arms are temporary just to get everything set up. I'm eventually going to build some adjustable uppers with heim joints. Trying to decide if I'm going to add the second upper arm on the original rear housing or wait for the 12 bolt.

    I was reading a recent post on installing a chevelle or some other 12 bolt rear and some fancy looking upper to make it a bolt in deal. I'm not sure how it would work with the upper pivot points being at different angle. They say the lover arms will bolt up with no mods. o_O

    That would certainly make things easier, I'll have to look into it. My housing is from a 65 Impala.

    Getting cold out so property maintenance has come to a halt and I'm back in the shop.

    Still in cleaning and painting mode. Can't wait until this shit work is over so I can get to the cool stuff. I'm not a fan of Red Oxide but it halfway match's what's already there and will be covered up eventually anyway. Wanted semi-gloss, found this at Home Depot ($22.95 qt). Used a 4" roller and it smoothed out nice.

    The first engine will be a large journal 327. Only reason being I had most of the parts laying around. The engine will be NHRA legal for Stock Eliminator, toned down a bit for the street. I will document the build here.

    Well, the holidays are over so I'm getting more shop time. Been getting a few things cleaned up and painted. Clean, paint, repeat, lol.
    Shipped the big stuff off to the blaster.

    Getting a few things done. I've never found an easy way to remove undercoating (until now). An aggressive cup brush on an angle grinder. I was sure it would clog the brush but it didn't. Worked great.

    Used the persuader to straighten a bent front support.

    Got the bigger front end parts back from the blaster.

    Had some extra holes in one of the wheel wells. I suck at welding sheet metal but what the heck, the holes are filled. As a buddy of mine says "bondo...it's beautiful stuff"

    A Propane torch and a scraper makes short work of undercoating... Stink's like Hell, but it work's!

    Tried that. Made a mess on the floor and on me and still had to use mineral spirits to clean what was left. The cup brush method provided clean metal and just swept up the powder left on the ground. Much better

    Good thinking on the face shield. Back in '65 of so I spent a whole weekend under the G/Stock '58 Delray big brother and I where putting together. Wire wheeling, scraping, grinding, etc. I think there was even some undercoat removal involved. I finally knocked off and looked in a mirror. It was scary. Love your project.

    I used one of those crud buster wheels on the Salt Shaker and it worked real well but it did consume itself.

    When it's old and dried out the wire wheel will work better than melting it.

    The torch and scraper worked better for me. The wire wheel just got it hot and smeared it around. Six of one or a half a dozen of another, I guess... :rolleyes:

    Made a couple of purchases. Found an Oklahoma hood locally that's much better than the one I had and picked up a proper pair of Jr Stocker street tires:).

    Started on the floor repair. Shot some rust encapsulator in the floor braces and weld through primer on the joints. Fitted up the patch panel and got it tacked in.
    I come from the mechanical side of things, this is uncharted territory for me. Just trying to learn something here and I figure the carpet will cover it:D. For the record, I really didn't care for how that primer welded.

    I haven't posted in a couple weeks because the car has been sitting in a friends body shop. This car had been hit in the front. The right frame horn was kinked outward and the bumper support was bent. I thought about heating it up and using a come along and sledge to work it back into place. I'm thankful to have that friend as he has a frame rack and could do the job right. Here's a before and after.

    Slow, but any progress is good progress I guess.

    It's actually starting to look like something. The bummer is I have about one more week to work on it and then it's all out on the off topic race car to get ready for racing season.

    Work continues on the floor. Added more tacks and plug welds to mimic the factory spot welds. It's not a pro job but I'm learning a lot and so far I'm happy with the results. Sheet metal seems to like .023 wire much better than .035 and a 3/16 hole works well for the plug welds. IMG_5836 (1).jpg IMG_5838 (1).jpg
    20 years ago I built a Turbo 400 for a guy and my pay was this Mig Welder. It's gotten more use in the last couple weeks than all the time I've owned it. IMG_5851.jpg

    I'm not finished welding the first patch but my A.D.D. kicked in so I decided to start on the other side of the floor. Got the old piece out and the patch roughed in. The shelf's on the side and rear of the patch panel give some much needed leeway for fitting the butt joints.

    After a summer of O.T. Drag Racing among other things, I finally spent some time on the 62 this week. When I started this project my intention was to do a mechanical and just get it up and running. Inspired by Jeff Norwell's 57 Ford #2, I decided clean things up a bit. The paint I used was old reliable semi-gloss Rustoleum.

    The cleaning is the worst part of the project but I'm thankfully close to having it done.

    I'm happy with the outcome and glad I decided to do it. Also started hanging some brake lines and other trinkets.

    I'm convinced this thing is trying to kill me. It has an on-off lock button. Told myself I was done buying tools but I'm in the market for a variable speed with a trigger.
