Anybody know the specific name for this small stubby allen screws that go on your shifting assembly above your plate . I lost one and my shifter bends out when shifting instead of being secured down

Yeah, McMaster and other industrial suppliers have them but you might have to purchase a large quantity. Is the bolt 5/16-18 or 3/8-16, and how long? I could send you one for the cost of the postage.

So true, you can find them all over. I like Mc because they have an easy to read format with all the sizes listed and part #s that can cross reference, and while the local places here still have great bolt bins, I keep hearing about life in the big city where even socks are behind locked display cases.

That would be..."McMaster Carr" for the uninitiated !!
No such place as "McMaster", at least not in this sense.

"Grainger" is another good place to shop.

And yes, they are "button head" screws.

Yes they're all too long it has to be mega short like 4 threads max cause your shifter as it goes front to back will hit. But thanks I found a site

Button head screws are evil, I throw them away and replace them with normal screws with a big hex on the outside.

When the driving tool is smaller than the thread diameter, you know it's gonna strip the head if it gets fully torqued.

and they look totally out of place on any car that is on topic here on the HAMB

As I have said before, if McMaster Carr doesn't have it you don't need it. I can order until about 9 pm and get it the next day in a brown truck.

Having the luxury of being in a large metropolitan area with multiple sources I have to ask because I don’t know the answer to this- if I wanted one button head from McMaster-Carr would they sell and ship just one to me? And if they would I’ll add this hypothetical question, what might that cost me?

it will come in a bag of enough screws to cost about ten bucks, then there's another 15 for shipping, so the screw will cost you 25 bucks. But prices might have gone up since I last checked.

Any decent hardware and sometime big box home improvement stores will carry button head screws. IMG_2096.jpeg Squirrel I can’t tell from the picture if a normal hex headed bolt will clear the linkage, I believe the button head head isn’t as tall as a normal cap screw, I’ll check when I get in the garage latter.

Don’t use provided Model T crack handle. :)

  23. Local Ace hardware has them. You will need to cut one down.

McMaster is 24 miles from my home about 1/2 mile from Moon Eyes in Norwalk. At one time I’d use the big Brown Truck but a week ago I wanted to order some 1” heat shrink and delivery was $32. No thanks, my wife’s car gets 30 mpg and I’ll drive for the $7.50. I have Amazon prime and found it there too for slightly less and next day free delivery. The Prime cost $29 a year and we order enough to make it worth while. My local electrical warehouse didn’t have any.

On a 3/8 unc the button head height is about .020 - .025 less than the head height on a grade 5 bolt.

If this is a serious question I'd ask a really intelligent question of the sales person and then say you weren't positive it would work for your ap so could they send one for you to test. OR I'd go to the local hardware and buy one too long and cut it short with one of hundred tools I have that could do that.

That thing looks so out of place. As a mech Eng, I would have never designed it with a button head type fastener. Also, is the one in the slotted plate used as a guide? Hard to tell. If so, the threads should not be used as a contact surface for the slot. The fastener should have a shoulder to guide the slot.
