Not sure which is more disturbing in this story; that the auction company would sell a piece without providence proving it is what it is claimed to be, or that a famous artist would sign a copy of his work for someone else for the price of breakfast. By signing a copy of his work, or work that was done in his style, his signature gives the appearance that he is claiming the work as his own. I bought a boat with great history from my mother, the legal owner. She gave me a bill of sale and the providence that the boat was what it was claimed to be. While I was overseas my dad sold the boat without permission or legal authority. To this day, I have the legal bill of sale and the providence to a boat that is in the Vic Edelbrock museum. I doubt that the person that provided the original verification providence ever signed a new letter of providence. Sometimes strange things happen.

I grew up in Orange, Ca and had a shop on Manzanita off Katella ave, then Batavia st and Collins, close to Betz Speed and Color where I bought paint.
Use to see Ed driving down Katella once in awhile. Met him several times. He invited me to his house to get more RatFink stickers. Went there a few times. Never thought to ask for his autograph or sign anything, and would have been embarrassed to. He was just a regular guy.

Mark’s pretty specific on a few things and every now and then I have to just chill him during certain events / time of the year that we’re Grandfathered in.

    But only a couple.

Good friend and Dude is a serious walking encyclopedia on custom stuff.

  11. ^^^{ JD Miller }^^^I got to meet Ed Roth only once. I went to a GoodGuys event in Carlisle Pa. in the mid 90's? I had made a stroller from an old 1937 Ford pedal car for my two year old daughter. My wife, had stayed home in Va. I had no idea that Ed. would be there. I just spotted him selling tee shirts in an outdoor booth. I could hardly believe my eyes! It was like seeing Elvis , the Beatles, and the Pope but only much BETTER! It didn't take me long to realize that he was just a cool Hot Rodder. The first thing he did was to get down on one knee beside my daughter sitting in her little Hot Rod. I had one of those little 8mm home movie cameras around my neck. He said turn that thing ON! So I did, and then he told my daughter this. { He said }sweety you have the Coolest Hot Rod here today. You've got Big and little tires. You've got Hot Rod primer paint, and you are the cutest girl I've seen all day! I had a long visit with Ed. Roth that day. Yes he was just a down to earth very cool Hot Rodder. It was one of my best days ever. Photo is of the same little pedal car, but not taken that day or event.:) Ron.... 284.jpg

C'mon man... it's not like there is a DeLorean in that pic :p:D
Well if Roth did the speech balloons then he did partake in some of the art work, so it's not a falsehood.
Other big knowns in the industry have signed items that they had little to no involvement in. Shelby would sign his name on whatever, doesn't make it that he was directly involved in the creation or modification of said item. Plenty of Musty Tangs with his name scribbled on the dash.

  15. Good to know it’s a phony, but I’d still buy it because it’s super cool! Obviously I wouldn’t pay real Ed Roth price for it. But if it could be had for a couple hundred I’m just the idiot to bite on that.

  16. This reminds me of the '56 Ford that had a grill from Roth, who painted it. The grill was the only part with that paint job, it looked like it was installed on a different truck. I thought it was bogus, but it is supposed to actually be the original truck.

  18. I met Ed Roth many years ago at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. My son, Michael, Ed Roth, and I were just standing around shooting the bull. Ed was eating a cheeseburger with the thickest slice of onion I had ever seen on a burger. He was a cool guy, just one of the guys. Somewhere I have pictures of Ed, my son Michael, and myself just standing around enjoying each other's company.

  19. I reported the video to YouTube as misinformation and used your exact quote in the report. Hopefully they will get the message that what they are trying to auction off is pure BS. ***Got this email from YouTube,

Reminds me a lot of the Tucker convertible that was claimed to be a factory prototype. The entire Tucker club knew it was bullshit and even provided a source for basically every piece of the car. Not just tracking down the source of one car, but of each piece used to make it. And yet the car sold for an enormous amount.

As for this door, it's cool, and I'd hang it on my shop wall, just because it's a neat bit of shop art, and Roth did at least scribble a bit on it, which is cool. But to say he painted it and it was on his shop, that's just shitty.

When I was a kid in the 80's, it seemed like every 40's car for sale claimed that Roosevelt rode around in it when it was new. The flavor of the bullshit changes with time, but it's still bullshit.

  30. I started this thread on Friday
    around 12 midnight.

    Moriarty contacted the auction
    house and expressed his concerns
    by 9 am. Saturday.

    I contacted the auction house
    and left a detailed message
    explaining who I was and
    that I authored the thread
    by 10:30 am. Saturday.

I did not request a call back.

    Late yesterday afternoon one
of the Donley Brothers called me.
He did not need to do that but that is
the type of business they are.

    The community and support
    network for Volo Museum is
incredible - unless you spend time
in the area you cannot fully appreciate
    the remarkable relationship that has
    existed since the 1970's.

    Donley Auction will meet with
    Greg Grams and discuss what
    to do to resolve this.

If you are curious about Greg Grams
watch the following video on my
YouTube channel that took when he
was putting together The Titanic Exhibit.

I have taken a lot of videos at Volo.
For me - this expresses who
Greg Grams is and what he values:
