Technical Need help on 1950 Olds Slip Yoke

Seems all my resources have been consumed.

So I’ll reach out to the best group I know.

I need a slip yoke for my olds trans. Tried a bunch of 50s stuff and no go.

What am I looking for and where can I find one?

1950 Oldmobile 3 speed output from a 1937 Lasalle box.

 

Not quite sure what you're looking for...do you have a 1937 LaSalle transmission in a 1950 Olds car? or what?

 

37 lasalle trans with 50 olds output shaft in 30 roadster.

I pushed a yoke from a 1955-63 Chevrolet on my '50 Olds three speed, and it seemed to fit.

 

I’ve got a 46 pontiac driveshaft splined into 1950 olds Hydramatic.

 

In Bakersfield, or the surrounding area there might be a drive shaft shop. Check there.

 

Did you find your answer? If not here it is. A 55-63 Chevy yoke and some 64 corvette's will work. Just went through this with my brothers

 

Yes. I found there are two types with the same diameter. One has a square cut spline and the other has a tapered tooth spline. The shape is trapezoidal. Came from a gm product from the 50s. Chevy has the square cut teeth spline.

 

So what did you end up getting? I have the same transmission in my Allard and need a slip yoke. If there is an off-the-shelf one that works that would be best. Otherwise will have to have a custom one made up.

 

You just have to get the right one. There are two types. Square cut spines and ones that are trapezoidal in shape. Not much choice on the matter. The olds mainshaft has trapezoidal splines.

 

Do you have a part number and/or source?

 

No sir. Got one from a friend who had old Pontiac parts laying around. I doubt they are available new.

 

years ago I pulled a yoke out of a early 49/50 hydramatic and it fit perfectly on my 50 Olds output shaft. Was I just lucky? don't know but it may offer up another choice

 

Yeah. The same on this one. Came from a 51 poncho with AT.

Well I am having no luck finding a yoke that will fit, everything I find has the square cut splines. If anyone on the board has one with the tapered splines and wants to part with it, please let me know. Had no idea it was going to be this difficult!

 

Give us the measurements so we have something to go on.

you need spline number, diameter, and u joint size.

Hamber dwollam just went through this a few years ago
ended up with one of these driveshaft slip yokes and had
the outer lathed down to a seal surface.
Might PM him about that.
had the outer casting turned down to a seal surface.

Just went through that. I tried a powrglide one that fit but would of needed to be trimmed way down. The I got lucky and found this one on the HAMB. This what you need to find. .

 

Here's the measurements I got:


1.169 major
.985 minor

I need 16 spline, angled splines. The Spicer stuff is all square spline.

 

And the OD is?

Possibility... bit expensive and vendor doesn't list splines or size but the Olds Parts book
does list this as Hyd and Stick trans.
Might be worth checking into..?

For reference is this yoke package listed as 39-50 with pic that shows a tapered spline

As @RDR ssaid, I used a Ford pickup sliding yoke that fit the splines well and had the drive line shop where I bought it make the drive shaft and turn the OD of the yoke down to fit my LaSalle trans. They left the yoke long so I could cut it to the length I needed. Seems to work well.

It's in my '33 Plymouth with 331 Hemi build listed below.

I now realize that there are 2 different tail shaft sizes..
The LaSalle trans shaft is 16 spline; 1.375 Dia. as in Daves' 33
The 50 Olds shaft is .........16 spline; 1.172 Dia. as has been said
and they both have involute splines..

vtwhead, the 506414 early yoke looks correct. A bit funky with the straps but should work
if you haven't got it or it is still available...get it.

 

RDR, I don't have those. Just saw it on the ebay site. Might send him a message to see what is available .....

 

I thought you were measuring the splines, sorry.

 

as skooch posted the Pontiac and I would guess the Buick standard trans also used the same yoke
