Technical ***April 2024 Banger Meet Thread - Don't Be Fooled Accept No Substitutes***

  1. Dan hit most of the high points, I will just add this.
    Do not, ever put two compressible head gaskets into one of these engines.
    I have seen this too many times and it just causes issues.
    If you need clearance for piston to head clearance, cut the pistons or cut the relief in the head.
    Also, you do not need any more than 55 ft lbs torque on the studs or head bolts.

    I have one season on the Dan 4 Banger head and B pump, I’ve been very pleased with it.

    Very nice. What cam are you running? Are the intake valves enlarged? Did you have it machined and the assemble it yourself?

    Speaking of Cam's, I've been wondering about a Burtz cam, they are bigger than a B from what I understand, I wonder how much you could get out of a regrind on one.... Hmmm

    I assume that a Burtz Cam would be a good cam for a high compression head but I wonder how it would be compared to what Brierley refers to as a Winfield 1R.

  6. Not sure if you know but Brierley has ground some of the Burtz cams with great results

    The reason for thinking along these lines is that as I understand it the Burtz cam would have alot more material as a 'blank' as it were, as the A Cam's end up rather spindly with a big grind.

    @johnneilson I had no idea Brierly was doing that, good to know :D

  8. I am not so sure there is much more material on the Burtz cam
    You are up against the limitations of length vs diameter
    For the race motors we bore out the block and make larger diameter cams
    This allows for more lift and leaves a larger base circle lobe

    Hey Dean, it’s a super touring cam, I’m sorry I don’t have the particular specs handy.
    1 3/4” intake valves and 1 9/16” exhaust. I had the engine built from a big name company in California and had a bunch of issues but they are dialed in now and it runs well. I have been pleased with the D4Banger parts and great customer service for whatever that’s worth from me. Cheers

    John you are one (of a number) of the reasons why I love this place, you have 'been there done that' & are helpful with input, thankyou!
    out of interest when running your cam blanks, do you machine the oil pump/dissy drive gear? Or are you running them separately?

    Let me guess… H&H Antique built it. I’m glad you got it sorted out.
    I drove 500 miles out to Dan’s, a month after my surgery and bought a Model B engine he had. It’s going in my truck. I have no problem buying from him. It’s nice to hear positive remarks about his B flathead.
    I’m going to build an engine for the truck or an A I’ve not gotten yet. I like the idea of a B head since I have a small collection of B blocks and cranks.

  15. Yes both some with disty drives and others not
    The issue with larger dia cams is that the gear has to stay standard size and the bearing area gets marginal
    All the more reason to use 5 bearing set up
    I do send the blanks out to have the gear cut
    I do have limitations….

    After many years , mostly doing other stuff, I am on the home stretch. Another 12 months and it should be complete enough for test runs, Doing final assembly on the engine now.

    The engine is original to the car, so it is a 33' B engine with full counter weighted crank, the head is a YAPP Riley 2 port overhead conversion, I have modified the block for full pressure oil, had the crank drilled to pressure the rod bearings and modified for insert rod and main bearings. I have adapted a Tremec TR6060 6 speed to a BB bellhousing.

    Little late, but checkin in.
    Started throwing a car together after too much other stuff has gotten in the way.
    A frame stepped in the rear, T spring, B motor with Brierley head, 39 trans with clings adapter 32 wheels, 27 T coupe. Should be fun.
    Waiting on a 36 axle to be dropped. But OKie Joe just had surgery so it might be a few weeks.
    Going to keep mech. brakes with 32s up front. Works pretty well.

    Wuch y’all thinka my latest scheme to build a sleeve to reduce the B throttle barrel down to either A or AA (haven’t decided yet). It will disrupt the venturi to butterfly proportions, but hopefully will work OK. Now to order up that new manifold…

    @walls that looks like a really neat project, like the approach, & looking forward to seeing your approach to the brake actuator's

    @Kevin Pharis I'm not sure what I'm looking at regarding the butterfly & I'm interested in seeing how much difference there is in spite of the proportion's being out. I have lots to learn about Carburetor's
