We were driving on this paved road near Mt Rushmore. At the place where you turned onto the road there was a huge sign that stated:
No trucks (larger then a pickup).
    No trailers of any kind.
    No RVs.
About a mile later was a big turn around area and a larger version of the same sign was posted.
Another mile down the road, another turn around point and the same sign. This turn around point had one of those overhead clearance markers.
About a mile after that, the road started getting narrower, and began to have sharp turns. Then there was a short straight stretch with a tight turn around point, the same road sign, only much bigger, and another one of those over head clearance signs.
Then the road narrowed more and the turns got tighter. We started to climb a pretty high "hill" with switch backs, and ledges without guardrails. Then suddenly all traffic was stopped, lots of flashing red lights, 2 or 3 cars pulled over to the side of the road as close to the edge as possible. I got out of the car and walked up around the curve to see what was going on. Around that curve ahead was a very sharp 90 degree turn, and a tunnel cut through the side of the hill that was only big enough for one vehicle, about 8' wide and maybe 10' high.

Stopped just before the tunnel was a huge 36' RV. Apparently, he had driven around all the warning signs and clearance signs, must have thought they didn't apply to him. The police were walking along the RV as he was backing up. He was going to have to back that RV up until he reached that last turn a round place, then maybe he would be able to turn around and return to the main highway. I can imagine how much that stunt cost him, we had to wait about a 1/2 hour before he got past us. I'm hoping they closed the road after we went past that last turn around point, or I sure pity the fool as he had to back up that RV along the path through those switchbacks without the guardrails. The idea of trying to do it with cars pulled to the side along the path is down right scary.

After we got past the fool with the RV, it was a pretty cool drive. There were 3 tunnels carved through the hill sides. That last tunnel as you drove through it framed Mt Rushmore perfectly. I wanted to take a picture, but I would have been holding up traffic from both directions.

You sure wouldn’t want to come upon much of a hill or a dip the in road with that rig, could be interesting.

Not car related, but I took the wife out for our Friday night fish fry. Seems like they’re getting concerned about my salt intake now. :)

  9. Gene, I believe that is called Iron Mountain Road. It’s breathtaking, I’ve been though there several times, but always on a Harley. The first year we took Mom and my wife Tonya to Sturgis, we came through one of the tunnels and it was sunny on one side and hailing on the other.

Gene, All of that reminds me of the riddle,,, What is the difference between a Fairy Tale, and a Truck driver's story?
Well a Fairy Tale begins, "Once upon a time,,,"
The truck drivers story starts out with Y'Ain't gun bleev dis shit!!:D:D:D

This is my home town Hamden ct. It is the Ghost parking lot in the Hamden mart , It is gone now, I took one of the last pictures of it ,the day before it was torn up.I believe there are other pictures of it here on the H.A.M.B , that is my my 54 in the lot.I have more pictures some were, The Ghost parking lot was a "Art project" the cars were suppose to look like they were coming up out of the pavement and sinking back down. there were many rumors about the place , Supposedly there was car that was donated by a family of a man killed in a DUI as a memorial,A 5 fall 2001.jpg fter about 20 yrs the cars began to Deteriorate under the pavement and kids skateboarding over them did not help things, finely one day some one fell through the roof of one of the cars and that's when it was decided it was time for them to go.I worked for the salvage yard that was removing them and I had left the job a week before they got the order to help with the cars disposal. It was removed in fall 2000. I believe.
