Hello, been on the HAMB for years but haven’t posted in a while (could use your help!). Just brought home a 1939 Ford Convertible and am looking for pictures of an original top mechanism (preferably without the top cover but inside pics would work). Also looking for pictures or a reference on the original tac-strip (at the rear of the car where the top attaches). As always, Thanks!!!
I'm not sure if the '39 top is the same as the '38 club cabriolet or not...but here are some pics of our '38 top frame when I was rebuilding it in case they are helpful. Note that I still don't have the correct rear wood bow, so it's not in any of the pictures. You'll note that I removed all the factory fasteners/rivets and replaced them with button head allen screws, bronze bushings and UHMW washers to reduce potential rattling. And of course there is @ronzmtrwrx who is building a '39 convt.
This is a photo that kind of shows the rear bows in place, though as stated above, I still don't have a replacement wood rear bow.
I don’t have any pics of my top irons with it on the car but I can lay it out and take some tomorrow when I get to the shop. I did take a few pics of a 39 at a show as I was a bit curious if mine was assembled correctly. Mine was taken apart at some point way back and chromed and reassembled. Here’s the pics of the one I saw in Pigeon Forge.
@dolsen37 Hello, Anyone who buys a 39 Ford convertible gets a thumbs up from my wife and a person with a good photo eye. She was attending a community car show with her sister and happened to come up to a very nicely finished 1939 Ford Convertible. She came home and instantly showed me the photos. I was amazed at the photos. They were taken with a very old Iphone and were very clear. Of course, I had to talk her down from the excitement. She wanted to buy that particular 39 Ford Convertible and if it were for sale, it would have been sitting in our garage, replacing her trusty daily driver. Having owned and driven a 327 powered Ford Sedan Delivery that we spent countless hours as a project rebuild for safety, she was all for another Ford. This time, the old adage of open air cruising appealed to her. Ha! In sunny So Cal? Who is/was she kidding? Jnaki Her experience driving our 327 powered 40 Ford Sedan Delivery moved on to the next step in hot rods for her. It was a good thing the convertible was not for sale and that we had just bought a daily driver for her, recently. It looked good from all angles and the color would have gone well inside of our garage with the other silver station wagon parked in the next space. Good Luck and have fun on your project !
