I'm also thinking it was something that was already in the block part of the cooling system. Could have been just enough of some old antifreeze and didn't agree with what you added, or it could have been something else laying in the block.

  2. The red antifreeze was called Dexcool, if you mixed that with regular green it would gel up and practically ruin your whole cooling system.
My 02 silverado uses that stuff but nowadays I think there's a red for Asian cars.

1st drive on the road? Man, I hope the engine's ok. A HAMBer recently said there's no intermittent problems, only the symptom comes and goes. So if there's really something wrong, you'll find out soon.

If you suspect a tiny leak after your trial period, ^this stuff is said to really work. I might catch some flak for suggesting this. But hey, Scotty was talking crate engines...

  5. Steve,

That stuff is GREAT! In the old days it was called "Silver Stallion"...I kept a tube in everything I drove any amount of distance & the stuff worked every time I used it. Several times with radiator leaks, it lasted for so long, I forgot it was in there!

    God Bless

Black pepper works good in a pinch and your truck will smell like steak too!

  7. I use pepper on a big leak between the water pump and block on an sbc. It was pissing a steady stream. It was the only thing available when and where i was, someone suggested it and handed me a pepper shaker. It held for the rest of the season

I found the pepper trick on accident. Intake leak on a BBC. I borrowed 2 pepper shakers from the Clown’s restraunt (back when they had them on the tables). 2 full shakers and lasted all summer. It swells with the hot water.

Amazing trick, saw it work once and almost didn't believe it!

You need to remove the block drains or core plugs on both sides of the block, removing the lower hose is not enough.... hope it ain't cracked...

Yeah I hope it's not cracked too. Today it's fine. Clean clear water. I'm gonna drive it a few days. The dry residue resembles dirt or rust, not oil. And again I've lost no oil. Sitting on full on the dipstick 20240411_160835.jpg 20240411_160840.jpg 20240411_160844.jpg

If it's not a washout I'll drive it to the cruise in tmrw, if it's still clean after that I'll drain it and put antifreeze in it

Probably rust in the block. Mine did that last summer, ran water up until cold weather, drained it and it was bad rusty. Took about 3-4 times with Cascade and CLR before it cleared back up. Put antifreeze back in, fine since.

The only concern I have is that whatever it was came to the top. It didn't mix with the water, it floated, so that's my only worry. Not really a worry though, if it's fucked, I'll build a new engine. Just getting tired of having bad luck.

If it was me ..... but it isn't ..... I would go to the grocery store and pick up 2 gallons of white cleaning vinegar. I would fill the cooling system, top it off with water ..... then drive it through several heat cycles.

It will do a very nice job of mildly cleaning the cooling system without causing damage .... then repeat if necessary. ...... My truck I left it in for a month or two then flushed it and did it again for another month ... slow but works well without being aggressive.

So maybe some oil got into the rad or block while it was apart. It just now gathered at the top of rad.

Uh oh lol... took it for a ride after I put another temp gauge in it, everything was wonderful. Pulled up to the bay door and checked the radiator, BAM! it's back. Took a shop rag and wiped it out, then I seen the bubbles. I believe it's compression in the radiator. So, I'll pull the heads, maybe tmrw night. 20240414_144610.jpg

  22. If it makes you feel better almost everything I do is a cluster fuck….this morning going to get that truck, I lost the gas cap off my gas air compressor, had a flat tire on the trailer and then couldn’t get the compressor to run despite running perfectly fine yesterday. I considered it a successful trip! Lol
