    Hello,

We started our 58 Chevy Impala racing days in the fall of 1957, when my brother got his black sedan in shape, ready for the intense action. We knew that class was popular and a lot of similar cars with experienced drivers were already the “Top Dogs.” But, we knew all of the cars had to have similar set ups and so, we knew we had a chance to be competitive. Perhaps, win a few for those cool trophies.

As we secured our spot in the Lion’s Dragstrip pits area we noticed the vast array of competition style race cars. Their open headers and tuning sessions were “music to our ears…” We wished we could be a part of that display of power. So, we did what most did to increase the fine parts of tuning a “stock” motor” from the factory specs.

We were all interspersed between various full race cars and that was fine with us. It was like watching worker bees gathering all of the stuff necessary to make things happen, like go fast and compete against the others. Sometimes, the others were right next to your “pit” area.

Eldon Dye and builder/racer Don Hampton had plenty of race car builds during our time at the local dragstrips. They were veterans way back then.

Don Hampton had his abilities in many competition classes, from top eliminator FED cars to Competition Coupes. His prowess grew into a long standing supercharger business that is still going on today.
