OK, glad you've come up for air. So WTF was the problem? Head gasket leak from cylinder to to water holes in deck? I thought maybe it was a cracked cylinder wall opening up when hot. Didn't have the heart to mention it earlier knowing what you've been through. Oh and please turn the brightness down on the upholstery i've got a Mexican blanket burned into my screen,:D

  5. Looking good Brother!! I like the color of your fancy new upholstery. It goes well with the blue. What did you find on the engine? Don’t worry about the source of your upholstery, they will shit when they find out I got the fuse panel for my 50 there as well.

There were multiple bad spots on the left bank. It had metal shim gaskets, and they were corroded. I didn't find anything that stuck out other than that. I have my fingers crossed. But if it still does it I'll just have to come up with another small block, story of my life lol... hey! Maybe I'll get a go fund me account thing and buy a crate engine! :D imagejpeg_0.jpg

I thought it was pretty snazzy  thinking about just widening this seat and hog ringing the blankets on it. Matching door panels too :D

@Lloyd's paint & glass A felpro or decent composite gasket will probably seal it up. Back in the olden days we would spray those steel shim gaskets with copper sealant. We'll keep our fingers crossed just in case.

I picked up a felpro head set this morning. The heads are back on it, not torqued yet, hoping to get it back together tmrw after I close up shop.

If you have a new standard ignition coil and it says "12v" does that mean i don't need a ballast resistor? Hey @Moriarity does the points/ condenser in the distributor you sent me need a resistor??

You need a resistor or you will have burnt contact breakers. You will also overheat the coil. Chevy also had a 12 v bypass wire for starting.

you need a 1.5 ohm coil and a 1.5 ohm resistor

  16. You can use a 3 ohm coil and then you don’t need a resistor. I used a Standard Ignition UC-15 on my old Chevy. It was about $21.00 from The Rock.

My vote is for 1.5 coil along 1.5 resistor with by pass over a stand alone 3.0 coil.

If the coil has the resistor built in they are usually marked “ built in resistor “ or “ no resistor needed”.
Yes, if there isn’t some resistance in there somewhere where it will burn points pretty fast. Been there, done that…

  20. Please understand, I’m not trying to be a wise ass, but why do you choose the resistor and lower resistance coil?

I always liked the bypass of the resistor for starting. The biggest need for the extra spark is start up and getting full battery voltage to the 1.5 coil gives you just a little more spark to get it started. Once the starter is released then both systems have the same spark ability and same overall resistance. Why wouldn't you go with the 1.5?

  22. Ok, that makes sense, I just didn’t want to have to add the resistor to the circuit. I’m just being lazy I guess.

It’s like this. Awaken at 4:30 am, can’t get back to sleep, upset stomach, was it the chilli dog, soda or Java chip ice cream? No idea. So considering, it’s still ignition 1.5 1.5 version. :)

As for why, I prefer the extra voltage at the coil upon start up.

Fuck all of ya, I put the hei back in it lmao!! It's back together, I let it idle for about 20 minutes, got to 200 on the gauge, and nothing came out of the radiator fill. So I guess we'll see on that issue. Now the new issue, at 200 degrees, i pulled it in gear, and the lizard licking fucktard oil pressure drops to below 5psi. I give up on this shit. From this day forward, if I didn't build the engine, it's a fucking core lol. Sorry for the profanity.

  25. Before you say fubar, try a different gauge......Maybe a POS landed in the line if it's a manual. If electric= check your shit=connections........Gasket change shouldn't effect oil pressure what so ever, unless the hillbilly was let out of the cage......... Copy?;)

It's mechanical, I've got another one laying there i can try. This is the first time it's gotten to 200, I'm sure it's worn out. Was supposed to have been rebuilt, just like everything else I've bought, but pulling the heads proved that's not the case. I'll mess with it some more this weekend, at the firehouse for 36 straight now.

Yeah I didn't mean that it had anything to do with head gaskets, I meant that when it got good and warm the pressure dropped

So you never really tried a shake down run then before the issue? I thought you had.

Yep, up and down the road, but the truck never got over 180 and I didn't look at the oil pressure idling, until this evening
