I thought this was the HAMB and that independent front suspensions were allowed on the HAMB.

    absolutely not......
    from the rules
    5. As mentioned throughout these guidelines, the H.A.M.B. focuses on TRADITIONAL hot rods and customs. Posts pertaining to traditionally inspired, but not quite period perfect belong on the main forum found here. Please note that we don't focus on things such as modern fuel injected motors, big-inch wheels, frame clips, after market independent suspensions, etc... at all on the H.A.M.B.. As such, posts that stray away from the "traditional inspired" will be deleted.

Well, I want to thank all who have provided encouragement and suggestions. I have really appreciated your comments. As I understand Moriarity's post because because I have IFS on my 35 ford, I am not welcome on the HAMB. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can post my build progress and get the kind of encouragement and support I found here?
    Thanks and goodbye.

Just don't show pics of the IFS and you're fine.

  6. Hi Gene, there are many on here with similar modifications. As @Dooley suggested, a little strategic effort on camera angles and prudent choice of words keeps the offending issues from making an appearance. Hopefully you can make that work for your build thread and will continue to post here.

I think we've all tripped over that line on occasion.

Yup, simply continue with your build, just don't show pics or talk about your off topic frame

Seems a shame that a guy who is learning,...open to advise and skinning his knuckles, in a tiny garage, to upgrade an old Hot Rod that he's driven tens of thousands of miles, gets slapped for showing a store bought frame. I encouraged Gene to post his build in order to share with others and benefit from advice from those who experienced similar challenges or who have questions.
Being in a similar situation, and at rick of censure, one is discouraged from sharing their adventure if doing so requires careful and edited use of the camera and the word!

I have decided to see if anyone is interested in my old frame. It is the original unboxed frame with parallel leaf rear springs and ride tech shocks. It has a straight front axle and split wishbones. The front brakes are wildwood 140-11013 1934 - 1948 early Ford - drum spindle. I will use the rare end and rear brakes on the new frame.

  10. Only if they are not aftermarket and fit HAMB years according to what Moriarity posted. Sounds like if you used a 64 Jag one you would be fine.

I also am currently building a 35 Ford but have not posted a build thread as I installed one of the very popular aftermarket front suspensions.

  11. It has been made clear, that your build is welcome here...only one aspect of it is "off topic", but as pointed out, just leave it out of the conversation/pictures.
So many aspects of building a Hot Rod, that one singular portion of the build (that's easily omitted, in this thread) that would be to have you leave this site seems...well, silly to be frank.
Looking forward to your updates, don't miss an opportunity to share with like minded individuals your progress.

Since I received the frame, I've spent a lot of time fitting parts before I start to paint. Tried paint the shock mounts with POR-15. I wasn't very happy with the finish so I decided to order Eastwoods 2k ceramic chassis paint. Naturally they can't ship that product to California. So, I'm back to POR-15. I tried rolling instead of brushing this time. The first coat looked good. It leveled nicely an left a good finish. When I put in the second coat it was filled with bubbles. I believe that I put the second coat on too soon and that caused the bubbles. I will try another sample and leave more time between coats.

A lot of the mill scale on the frame has been removed by fatman as they fabricated the frame. In order to get ready for paint, I have been cleaning off the mill scale they didn't get. I tried sanding with 80 grit on a DA sander, a flap wheel and abrasive disks. I recently ran across Scotch-Brite Clean & Strip. It works much faster and easier than anything else.

Am following this thread with interest. Keep up the good work. Interesting that Moriarity said in Post 20 that Ryan changed the rules once he replaced his front end.

Ryans front end had nothing to do with the rule change, Ryan tightened up all of the rules back in 2013 after he ran into a guy at the roundup with a spot on 100% era correct model A. when Ryan asked what his Hamb name was the guy replied "I am not a member, there is way too much modern content there for me". So just the sort of member or car that he was trying to attract were being repelled by too much late model content.....

It's been almost a month since I posted my frame for sale. I haven't seen any interest. I just don't have room for two frames and a body in my small garage. Today I posted a new offer in the classified section to give it up for free without the brakes. I will give it a couple of weeks. If no one wants it, I will cut it up and take it to a scrap yard. I hate to scrap an original ford frame but I need the room.

no, you can’t post any pictures of your front end……

  18. Maybe Gene's build should be moved to the OT forum so he can post pics of his frame?

I was just trying to understand Fat47's comment. The front suspension is an insignificant part of the whole project. I don't to be exiled to an off topic forum. I value the comments and suggestions I get from the people who have been viewing my posts.
I promise I will never again mention my front end again.

Hard to believe that I haven’t posted anything since May. The summer was filled with 10,000 miles of road trips including 4,000 with the canam curmudgeons. The curmudgeons cruise was made in my Factory Five Cobra and had several days with a high of 45 degrees and rain. The other 6,000 miles were our annual trip to the Experimental Aircraft Association fly in in Oshkosh WI. That trip was a little more comfortable in my daily driver with my wife and dog.

While I haven’t been posting I have been slowly working on the 35 rebuild.

I removed the rear brakes, differential and shocks from my old frame. I found someone who took my old frame which gave me some needed room in my garage.

I tried using POR15 to paint the frame but was was disappointed with the look, so I decided to prime the frame with Eastwood epoxy primer and then topcoat with Eastwood 2k ceramic chassis paint. When I ordered it from Eastwood, they said they couldn’t ship it to California. However when I went to Amazon, they did ship it to me. Unfortunately, when I ran out of the chassis paint and ordered another quart from Amazon, they would not ship it to me. I had to finish with Eastwood extreme chassis black.

    20240919_171957.jpg

Once the frame was painted, I remounted the body on the frame and identified the body mount bolt locations on the frame. A friend suggested I use hex rivnuts in the mounting holes. After drilling a hole in a test plate, I hand filed the round holes to a crude hex and inserted the rivnut. I tested the nut by torquing a 3/8 inch bolt and torqued till it failed. The good news was that the nut did not spin.

I am slowly drilling, hand filing and installing rivnuts in all the body mount locations. It’s time consuming with very little sense of accomplishment so I only do about one per week while I work on other things.

I Installed the 8 inch rear end and Wilwood brakes from the old chassis and the new rear shocks from Fatman.

I installed the new front suspension and Wilwood brakes.

That was followed by installing the new power steering rack from Fatman.

The next step will be to plumb the brake lines and start to rebuild the engine.

I am getting the body ready for media blasting. I ran into some trouble cutting through the rubber holding the rear window in. The rubber was hard. I think it was installed about 45 years ago but it might be the original 90 year old rubber. I called Steele Rubber Products for advice. They suggested spraying the old rubber with WD-40. It worked great. I let the WD-40 sit over night and in the morning it was soft and easy to cut. 20250109_151159.jpg
After cutting the seal I discovered that the window was painted in. However a little work with a razor blade and the window came right out.
    20250110_152016.jpg
I have had the body sitting in my driveway since I took it off the frame. Next week I will rent a 6 x 12 trailer and take it to the blaster.

  28. Thanks for the update Gene.

Nice build, Gene. I am building a '36 Fordor Touring Sedan with the help of Platinum Custom Cars. I, too, am 'relegated' to the Off Topic forum because of my early IFS Roadster Shop frame and electronic fuel injected 383 stroker motor. I am not offended, as I understand the Traditional Hot Rod and Traditional Customs forums are for those that prefer following traditonal approaches to building their cars. I personally want a dependable, comfortable car that has a lot of the traditional elements but dependable enough to drive anywhere or on a daily basis. That's just MY preference. I respect the old school style builds, and the work it takes to get them 'just right', but prefer more of a street rod approach to my own build. Like guys that prefer blondes, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with brunettes. I like the way this site is set up; I can browse the Traditional threads for fun or info and tips, and return to Off Topic for cars more like mine and share info and insights into topics relevant to people with similar cars, rather than hide these aspects of our hard work and planning. Like every owner with a car on all of these forums, I take pride in my project. Just because I am proud of the IFS set up in my '36 doesn't mean it's appropriate for the other forums. My only grind is the breadth of the vehicles and stuff that the Off Topic forum covers, with everything from street rods like mine, kit cars, late model muscle cars, rat rods, car art work, postage stamps with pictures of cars on 'em, etc., it's kind of like the "junk drawer" of the site. Like the junk drawer everybody has in their kitchen, this forum has a wide variety of stuff in it, which sometimes makes it hard to find what you're looking for but still fun to sort through 'cause you never know what you might come across. I would like to see a separate Street Rod forum, designated for early cars with updated running gear, etc., while still retaining styling cues of the hot rod community, such as shaved doors and chopped tops. Until then, you'll find me in the junk draw...I mean the Off Topic forum.

This morning I loaded the body on a trailer and took it to the blaster. They estimate 3 to 4 weeks. Looks like I better get to work drilling and filing the rivnut holes.
