I just flushed the coolant in Clarence. What should I do with the waste liquid?

50 years ago when I last drained coolant I probably just ran it down the gutter or drain. I don't think I should do that again.

btw; I live out in the boonies but doubt I should scatter it on the ground in the woods or on the gravel road.

  3. A lot of cities have recycle drop off points and accept used anti-freeze. Living out in the country is a different matter, but it still should be disposed of properly, as it is highly toxic to animals and pets.

  4. I give it to my mother in law ......just a tiny bit at a time....she loves my Long Island Tea....

Most lube places/ repair shops will take your jugs of used oil / used anti freeze.

It does cost them to dispose of it so as a good gesture, maybe get a LOF change every once in a while in appreciation.

    That’s what I do.

I was told a septic is fine to put anti freeze in. So I pour in the toilet in the shop.

Not sure who told you that but I’ve never heard anyone suggesting that and as far as I know you get caught not good.
Either way on a public septic system it shows up in the system and they will investigate it.
Or a country system - it can leach into the ground and if you have a well, could - could seep lower into the ground with traces showing up in ground water.
You get caught, it won’t be pretty.

If my M-I-L was still alive that would be a great idea.

No; I didn't poison her. She succumbed to Alzheimer's.

Actually was the pumper guy I had out some 10 years ago. Since we live on sand -basically- and the well top is about 55 foot down, he (and I agree) nothing would even make it to the water.

    But two things;).
I won’t try to stand behind/back it or argue for it.
Also it would take some type of spy surveillance thing to see me do it.
Oh, yes, I do take my used oil to AZ, so there’s that!

About 1994 I called the city of Madison WI about how to get rid of itas I was uncomfortable of them dumoing it down the drian were I worked and was told to pour it down the sink that was hooked to there city sewer system at the Factory International . Dressor and John Deere Shop . I was like really ? was told it goes through there system just fine . I am still dubious of the info I was given and I know we cant do that to day . We have it picked up by the same people who get our waste oil . I know The Cat dealer started recycling it around the late 90's .

Trust me 10 years ago the world had changed.
I wouldn’t be caught dead dumping anything.
Not worth the risk. Drop it off at a recyc center.

I live in the boonies too, plus on well water. No way I dump gas oil and antifreeze, though years ago I never gave it a second thought.
My township has a dump I drop it off at, I’m there every Saturday as it is. Oil I give to the local body shop, as he burns it in his shops furnace in the winter.

  15. I reuse it. It doesn't go bad, just gets dirty. Store it in jugs out of the way and all the sediment settles to the bottom.

County waste transfer station takes it.

Talk to local shops, see what they do with theirs?

What I used to do with waste liquids in the past is a secret. Nope...I won't tell you.
Now I have some five gallon jugs that, when full, I take them to an oil change place. No charge.

No argument. I thought it was bizarre then. Just thought id share how things have changed
I know of a couple places that did stupid stuff and now there a hazmat nightmare.

One used to clean out here steam clean pit for heavy equipment and then dump the mud and oil ozzzze and they got busted and the whole property is condemned and the property cant be sold or used for the last 20 years .

No reason to dump stuff like this into he ground when most towns or countries have a easy way to get rid of it .

The site that used to make Keystone wheels in northern is a toxic waste are as well .
PCP's or some solvent they used to dump .

50 years ago my Grandfather had a road grater and they had 55 gallon waste oil barrels on it with spray bars to oil the road right off the coast north of Bodega Bay Ca. Sonoma county used to pay him to do it to keep the dust down .

In the 80's a buddy got rich in Northern CA hauling dirt out of gas stations when the tanks leaked to NV . He made a few million as he was one of the first to have all the hazmat licenses and such . He used to sponsor the sprint car .

Some of bigger equipment places recycle filter it and adjust the coolant PH level and additives on site and reuse it .

    Different times .

Put it in gal container, place it into an Amazon box
drive to town in your pickup truck
after parking, drop the tailgate and leave the amazon box on the edge of the tailgate
    go have a nice dinner
It will be gone when you get back

Was told the same thing. At work a pumper truck comes and sucks out all our old coolant out of the cnc mills and and wash tank crap and said they dump it in the landfill. Wtf! Has all tramp oil and who knows what in it.

Oiling the roads was how the town of Times Beach, Missouri got shut down and everyone relocated.

The PH level can get really out of wack and cause some issues like electrolysis and issues and on diesels with bubbles on cylinder liners and pin holes . John Deere sells or used to sell test strips and additives to adjust it . I used to bring home gallons of it from work and run it in stuff .

In modern cars its important its right .

I never seem to have any old anti freeze. Usually end up with a leaky radiator or blow a hose and end up losing all of it on the road somewhere. The few times I did drain one to replace a radiator or hose, I saved it it gallon jugs and used it to top stuff off or it got used in the old tractor that always seems to leak or burn a bit every time you use it.
I don’t do many oil changes at home anymore, just costs a few dollars more to take it to town and let them contend with the old stuff. Stuff like the tractors I still do, it’s saved in gallon jugs and used for burn piles and stump removal.

I worked where we had a cooling system for 2 , 1750 HP air compressors . The giant radiator would hold 28,000 gallons of coolant ( anti freeze ) . Every 2 years , 2 in drain hose into the sewer man hole along with a fire hose . Federal EPA says ok as long as you flush it with plenty of water .

A friend in a semi-rural area did a lot of research into this a few years ago and concluded it is okay to spread it on the ground, it is completely biodegradable.
Obviously it shouldn't be allowed to pool and poison animals.

However, pouring oil on the ground is not such a good idea. It's very different chemically from ethylene glycol antifreeze.
