Technical Early Ford Axles dropped in SoCal

Early Ford Axles dropped in So Cal if anyone is interested. I do at the moment axles up to 4” from Model A stock from 1928 to 1936. (37-up axle drops coming soon). Price is $180 a drop and includes some straightening (for typical forward and aft bowing) , holes cleaned up.

Axles with twist or vertical bends prices will vary and will need photos. I also ask please that axle is somewhat cleaned and freed of years of crud / rust. I wire wheel the ends where the drop will take place but that’s it. The rest of the axle can be wire wheeled / cleaned at extra cost. Shipping cost not included. Typical turnaround is 1-2 weeks from received. I can be reached at..

Good to know for sure. A few years back I was looking for a banned member somewhat in my area that dropped axles. I got leads and numbers but nothing panned out.
I do have one axle though that needs straightening, and a drop. I’ll have to figure the year out though. Maybe be a ‘37-newer.

Get some finished product together and plan to attend the LA Roadster Show at the Pomona fairgrounds the Friday & Saturday before Fathers day in June. Great place to show your talent and find prospective customers.

 

Today I cleaned up a crusty ol’ 37-41 axle I had laying around and was able to finally drop it . Here’s the before and after with a 4”.

 

This is great, although shipping to and from Pennsylvania takes some of the fun out of it.

I need to get another axle dropped, because.....

......a couple years ago I sent off a real nice stock axle to a fella in the state south of me. I wanted a 3 inch drop. I didn't get my original nice axle back, but instead was greeted by this when I unwrapped it.



Not sure if he was trying to pull a fast one, but I contacted him and got my original axle back with a 3 inch drop, but the camber is off a couple degrees on one side. I am reluctant to do any more business with them.

@Gearhead79 I'll likely contact you in a month or so, and ship you an axle to be done right.

 

Are Gimpy, Krylon, and Ebb all talking about the same guy? The former banned HAMBer, or a different old guy who I don’t think was ever on the HAMB?

I have heard about the bait and switch from a certain old guy from south central US.

Sid has done 2 axles for me . One Chevy and one 46 Ford . Very pleased with his work. So please verify who in the state south of you ?

Just to add to my original post, all my axles get dropped in the 1 1/2 postive camber area. Ford did them between 1.0 and 2.0 and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one out of this area of camber unless bent. My jig is not set up for anything else. I believe the reasoning for the postive camber was to facilitate steering on the rough roads of the time. Personally I like the look of slight positive camber thus why I stuck to it. Some guys like them at 0 degrees but getting this is too difficult for my press at this time. Not an option for the initial drop. Achieving exactly the same on both sides can be a challenge but I aim for identical symmetry . Some of the axles I receive are way way off this initial camber being bent over the years and I spend time getting them as close before dropping. After I drop them I adjust them on a press if necessary. I’ve seen axles dropped from old school droppers and no disrespect but they’re off the 1.0-2.0 positive degrees of camber . Almost always and even had one dropped that was one side positive camber and the other side negative .

 

The one I have on the build I'm doing now is 2º negative on one side and it looks like ass. Before I put it on the road I want to get the camber straightened out. I'll be in touch, thanks!
