Technical hubcaps that fit 16 inch lincoln wheels with clips

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by michaelantonia, May 1, 2024.

  1. Hi, looking for some help finding a supplier for either (ideally vintage) or nice repop baby moons that fit a 5 lug / 5 clip wheel. I bought some beautiful NOS wide beauty rings and would love to run smooth baby moons. Anyone have a great idea? ORRRRRR How difficult would it be to modify an existing ford or GM cap? I have a pair of beat Lincoln caps I could sacrifice for the mounts. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

I’d kill for the Lincoln rims, why not switch out for a set of earl ford f100 rims and leave the Lincoln’s alone as they’ll be covered anyway. Johnny

  4. No, they have nothing.

  5. Seems silly to change rims to accommodate baby moon caps ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I recently had my NOS OEM 46 Olds caps modified by The Wheelsmith to suit my new steel rims that use nibs to secure cap and not springs. My OEM caps used springs similar to yours however the caps wouldn't fit new rims hence what I did. I'd be skeptical if baby moons would fit with that long axle shaft protruding like that?

I'm going out on the end of the skinny branch and assume that you are running skirts on the back and only need the two caps for the front. Looking at this pair on Ebay eBay item number:305352239076 I'd say that you are on the right track with sacrificing a pair of dinged up Lincoln caps for the backs and attaching the baby moons. My experience with the newer baby moons is that the chrome is horrid and rusts pretty fast. Throw in that by "newer" I mean those sold in the early 80's.

  8. This is what i was thinking as well. Thanks for the photos.

You could use the Drake baldies by duplicating the bumps pressed into pre-'48 Ford wheels ... drill 1/4'' holes to match the bumps & fill with domed 1/4 - 20 screws & nuts. Or, drill 3/16'' holes & tap to 1/4 - 20 thread. Looking in '60s HRM, you'll find this was common practice on '49 - '51 Merc wheels.

  10. You and i are standing on the same skinny branch. I thought there might just be an easy solution that i was missing but it’s looking more like a modification is what is necessary.

  11. Amazing. Thank you for the info!

1940 to 1948 Ford hubcaps should fit.

I had a pair of 41 Lincoln 16x5 wheels and I found that 40 Ford caps and 41 Ford caps snapped on just fine for me and of course I was using them for rears. This would suggest that 40-48 Ford and Mercury caps would fit the wheels, like Rusty Bill said. However, your Lincoln spindles have longer snouts than Ford spindles and that may be an issue for you. You may need to find a couple of the old "high crown" baby moons for the 40-48 Ford wheels and try those.
