Technical Bolt on/weld on spring perches?

I am installing an 8” in my Model A. And so need to deal with the spring perches. I know that there are both weld on and bolt on ones available but I can’t seem to locate any. Suggestions?

Speedway ones.

Id go with the weld on ones so you can set the width and angle were you want it not to mention there cheaper .

Im sure others more in the know will have some thoughts

I cut the perches off model A and welded on 39 rear end.

Might want to grab a tape measure and make sure that 8” is wide enough for the main leaf want to use. A lot of them are too narrow

Tim, this whole swap thing was not planned and there seems to be one PITA/$$ problem after another. I am aware of the spring width and although not cheap, I think the best answer will be to have a main leaf custom made to fit. Although off the top of my head I can’t remember the name but there is somebody who does that for a reasonable cost. I should only need a main leaf, I think I can still use the rest of the spring pack. I would like to be able to mount the spring on the back of the axle like the V8’s do but that would require relocating the crossmember and that would require adding on to the back end of the frame. It never ends………

 

Thanks for the chart Andy. I’m going to go over to where the 8” currently resides and put a tape on it so that I KNOW what I’m dealing with and not just guessing (guessing rarely ends well, at least for me LoL).

 

Mill works has the narrowed spring but best I can tell only sell full packs

 

I measured my Maverick rear end. It is 49.5 in backing plate to backing plate. It is the narrowest of the bunch.
Here is another chart from the HAMB
56.5 minus 49.5 is 7" The 10 in drums assys are 3.5 in in width?

 

I recall I ran into issues as I recall with not enough width for the spring I had on my early bronco 9" as well .

 

Andy, mine is also a Maverick a when I measured it yesterday I came up with the same thing. This is only a guesstimate but I think the max spacing between perches would be about 45” allowing for brake bleeding and the space required by the perch itself.

 

I seem to recall that there is a guy that does Model A springs and will sell a main leaf only but I cannot remember his name. Speedway offers a “medium arch” spring that is 38” eye to eye (at least that’s what their website says) it does not say anything about it intended for a narrower than stock application however so I think that might be a typo.

 

I believe that he goes by the very basic “A Springs” (Travis Cook). Unfortunately I have not been able to call him due to “all circuits are busy at this time” for the last hour.

 

Is A Springs still around? He used to have a website but I can't find any online presence for him anymore.

 

He is no longer in business.

Back to the drawing board

 

Made my own out of 7/16 plate and tubing. Welded them on today using a jig I made up to get the correct angle and spacing. Am using the Speedway 38" medium arch rear spring. Instructions that came with the spring said to mount the spring hangers with the eyes 45" apart. Spring was fairly reasonable at $136.00
