From the pic the anti drain back diaphragm is right up against the plate. It is probably flipped upside down and doing its job, just that it's now preventing flow.

Its a mass produced item, there will never be 100% perfect product run nor a 100% Q.C. that will catch every fault.

    "Trust, but verify."

I prefill my filter which gives me a chance to inspect the filters functionality. Fill the center hole to the top, a proper check valve will not allow oil to fully drain/fill the filter quickly unless drainback diaphragm is pushed on allowing air to escape allowing oil fill.

If the filter is easily filled or difficult to fill I'll suspect something us internally faulty with the filter and not use it.

I use Baldwin on most all of my junk .

  3. in this day and age I check everything. I hate buying new ANYTHING but when absolutely necessary [like a filter] I look it over carefully. I have found nuts with no threads, frozen new parts, pieces missing , wrong part in right box, no part in box. I have gotten parts with missing mounting holes, and brand new parts that needed to be filed or taken apart and fixed.
a faulty filter wouldn't surprise me.

I put a Oberg with bypass light, no anti drain back valve, in my Shoebox in 1980 or so, now have about 40k street miles.

  5. I use a lot of Baldwin as well, we get great pricing on them at work.

  6. Looks like the assembly was screwed up.
I buy oil - fuel - gas filters from
    O'Reilly Auto Parts.
I buy their house brand which
    is Microguard.
Microguard was - and still might be
    a filter made by Wix.
No issues for my daily tow vehicle
which is a 1996 Ford F350 Crew Cab
    2WD Dually with a 7.3 PSD.

I've been using Fram filters for decades. Most were severe service applications. Never a problem. I just installed a Napa Gold filter on my small block Chevy. No problems that I can see. I kind of suspect you got a filter assembled by a hung over worker who put the rubber part upside down. Don't give up... :)

I think its a good idea to look at all parts bought today, and now especially oil filters. I'll be checking from now on.

The orange rubber is the check valve portion of the filter. I would say someone screwed up on their first day on the assembly line. I am pretty sure that either WIX or the parts supplier would replace it with no issues.

  11. Dude finds a single example of a filter that may have been assembled incorrectly and thinks an entire brand has "shit the bed". Hilarious.

  12. I went to a newly opened restaurant (big chain) in my area ... they served me a steak that was so dry I wouldn't have fed it to a dog. I didn't complain to the "chef", I just never returned ... ever. When someone pisses in my Cornflakes, I don't go back and order Rice Crispies from them later. I get it :)

Edelbrock sold me a piece of crap cam (hyd SBC), the gear on the cam that drives the dist failed during break-in ... the replacement Edelbrock cam failed in the same fashion too. I switched to a Comp Cam and had no issue (which proved that their claim of "our part isn't the problem, you clearly have an issue with your engine" was BS). I haven't purchased anything Edelbrock since. The Edelbrock intakes I already owned? I grabbed a dremel and ground off their name :D

Meh, I returned a Purolator last week that had what looked like hot glue dribbled in the threads. Products produced by the millions are bound to have a few get out the door with issues.

Seen that on inside of pleats, break off make into crank. Caused brg failure. Supplier spilled glue onto media sheets... ship it. Quality Control

  16. These things (and many others) are made on high-speed automated equipment that spit out thousands per hour. If something gets out of adjustment or a sensor goes bad, how long does the assembly line before the problem is noticed and solved? Shit happens..... as stated before.... trust but verify.

Doing a Google search of “Wix quality control for oil filters” shows all kinds of folks with quality issues. This one post from Tacoma World is interesting as it supposedly shows a new and old version of a Wix filter. Like folks commented, the new one appears to be inferior, and perhaps even a knock-off. Who knows, but one thing is for sure, quality is ever declining across the board as businesses care less and less about their customers in pursuit of the almighty dollar.
As a bit of an aside, as I slowly dismantled my 59A flathead last week which had been sitting outside and unused for probably close to 60-70 years, I only ran across one exh manifold bolt that needed some heat to loosen, and one snapped bolt which was located inside the water pump. It was a pleasant surprise and nice to know that there was an age where things were of a higher quality in certain regards, and were built to last.

So yes, the underlying message here is check the part before you run it.

I took the offending filter to the parts store not expecting anything but figured I'd kindly let them know "hey you might want to give this to your Wix rep, this is what happened" They said they'd warrantee it back to the factory and promptly refunded my money. So that's good! More than I expected.

Out of curiosity I did take the previously run wix filter to the band saw and didn't find anything that wasn't expected. I'm done. Lesson learned and thankfully no damage was done.

I had for gotten: China counterfeit filters were sold in Class 8 truck engines. Engines had poor fuel performance issues. Oil filters can be off shore counterfeits as well.

Certain trademarks, logos, date codes help ID real versus, counterfuts. Cut open, Engineering can tell by engr chg levels.

  21. Unless something has changed in the last couple of months Fram is now owned by trico the same people that make wiper blades.
As for the filter being made in China I would read the back of the box on every single filter of every single brand you buy. Wix and Fram have both USA made and Chinese made filters it just depends on the part number.
The same goes with AC Delco or Mopar or any of the other so-called name brands that the factory would use.
Unfortunately we live in a globalized world you have to read labels and just don't assume something is quality because of what brand it is.

Definitely looks like a bad filter in this case.
Sometimes, on a big block MoPar you have to ‘burp’ the filter after install if you have low or no oil pressure. I’ve never had it happen, but I know it can be an issue and not uncommon.

Unless I missed it, Wix is still a Mann & Hummel company. I've seen where they outsource some of their filter production from Champion Labs, which was part of the 2020 First Brands Acquisition. But thats not uncommon, they had a article last year about out sourcing to Donaldson for Napa's commercial vehicle and industrial filters.

If you have a article i'd love to read it, always nice to stay up to date on events.

I worked at a Dodge dealership and the owners teenage son changed the oil in him Mom's New Yorker. It didn't build any oil pressure so he started revving it up. Still no oil pressure. He came and got me and told me what he did. Since he had already revved it up for quite some time, I started by checking the oil level. There was no oil on the dip stick. While he did put the recommended amount of oil in the engine, he forgot to put the drain plug back in.
