And you wonder why people my age don't take our cars to shows....

A buddy of mine watches their stuff online. This is the first time I've ever seen any of their content. I may have woken up on the wrong side of the bed this morning but, on a scale of 1-10, I'll give them a 5. They're building cool cars but it appears they don't really know the basics as someone else said here. If she was afraid the car wouldnt start, why would her car have the battery connected if it had a drain? Or better yet...why didn't they fix the battery drain? Why don't they have any tools? Either at the shop or a bag in either car? Weird. Someone here mentioned it was a straight axle car...it has a arms. Did they change it? Just strikes me as young people trying to act the part and make internet content. Its not the worst thing in the world. I might be going too far...but many people in the video remind me of the folks wearing Von Dutch shit when they didn't even know who he was. Does the girl always wear skin tight tops in their videos?

The lack of knowledge by the casual car show goer made me sad. The young strapping dude with a girl, who basically was talking the car down, implying "unsafe" made me shake my head. Get some testosterone.

  2. @Crazy Steve I don't like everything about that car, however that is far from a rat rod (To quote my friend Dan "I don't want to see a car that's half a spaceship welded to an outhouse with a barbed wire steering wheel and a elephant's head hanging off the side"), it is a work in progress did you skip or just ignore the part where she says she knows it needs work.

I find some irony here in the fact it's the people with more money in their body and paint then I make in a full year of work with overtime who are offended by cars that have old weathered paint and surface rust, and people with patinaed cars aren't offended by high dollar paint or even shiny the issue is with the rude, nose in the air snobbery!

I have said many times I like it all!

At it's core hot rodding and racing are blue collar, many of us get up and start work before the sun rises work 40-60 hours a week need to drive our cars in process, and when you show up at an after working 10 to 11 hours a day at a real job and 3-4 hours a night on your project for two years or more get it starting, driving, steering and stopping take to an event to just to hear comments like "Tt's a rat rod" or "It's a piece of shit". Why would anyone want to be around the car show crowd?

I see what is happening to Hot Rods and it is what happed to oval track racing it is getting out of reach of the working man, and that is the point I am trying to make!

Instead of being rude, overly critical and chasing a young person off maybe offer to help them on their project just like the car clubs did back in the day.

It's almost like no one wants to share or pass on their knowledge anymore if you don't pass this stuff on it will die!
I would am always willing those who want to learn (I often help the younger guy in the shop or at shows swapmeets answer questions and would rather give a part away to someone who is going to use it.

  3. I have only seen a few minutes of these TV shows, and after seeing a couple where they rip out a nicely restored original interior, toss it into the dumpster (destroying it on purpose) and then putting in an interior which really belongs in a 2024 Turdola, I stopped watching. It's all crap done only for the camera. It would be very boring watching people say "that's a nice car, I like the flathead Ford V8 in there!"
I couldn't care less if someone called my car a rat rod, hot rod or a banana.

  4. I have watched more then several of their video's. She presents her self as a hot, hot rod girl. Yes ,she is very attractive, and that gets views. They make money off of you tube. I do like the car as a project to be worked on and improved. Just my 2 cents that basically means nothing.

  5. Well put Robert. I agree with everything you said.

  6. This recent video demonstrates their lack of the basics, it was kinda tough to watch when they portray themselves as knowledgeable car people.
She used to live/video with another dude and it seamed all they did was quote part numbers on anything and everything, kinda like that graveyard cars dude with all his rpo numbers.
I am jealous of all the free goods from the sponsors but they get the views to warrant sponsors wanting donate for exposure.

  10. I guess I didn't make it clear what I meant...

No, I didn't miss her comment that 'it needs work'. First, I define a 'rat rod' as any vehicle that has mechanical deficiencies that make it unsafe to drive on public roads. By her own admission, this one qualifies. Yet she knowingly drove it to this show, endangering both herself and others. This hobby had this car problem in its infancy, it took a lot of years to fix that. I'd hate to see it return. If she had trailered it into the show, I wouldn't have commented. I've been guilty of herding junk like this home from purchasing a few times before I got a trailer, but I stuck to less traveled roads at slow speeds, fairly short distances, and once it was home, it didn't leave until it was safe to drive.

I'll also include under the 'rat rod' definition vehicles that are 'safe' to drive (for the passengers) but have raw, ragged edges and/or protuberances that seem to be designed to disembowel pedestrians. I see too many cars with old saw blades welded on... WTF are they thinking?? This isn't post-apocalypse Australia, no Mad Max...

And I'm definitely not a 'gold chainer' snob. I'm a retired blue-collar guy with three ex-wives, so while I may have more bucks than a real young guy, I have to save up for big $$$ purchases. I'll never have a big $$$ paint job unless I win the lotto, and maybe not even then...

I watch most videos these days with the volume turned off. A lot of time I will scan through the video to see if there is anything in it that interests me enough to watch it more deeply. It takes a lot to get me to turn on the volume. Often turning on the volume causes the video to end quickly.
I did the quick scan, went back and watched a few places more closely. Never did turn on the volume. The captioned words were enough for me to grasp what the video was about.

I've driven cars in probably worse shape, home after a purchase. Entry into a show would have to be on the way home, or not far from the shop. That screwed up windshield would have been a big No-No for me. I can also tell you if I had any concerns about it starting again, or having a brake problem, it would have gone straight home, or never left home after it got there until those issues were fixed. I have made a few virgin 1st drives to car shows before though, you never really know how those are going to turn out.

I do sort of like to see fresh "barn" finds, but after that 1st show, when I see it at the 2nd show, they should have done something to improve it. There are differences between a barn find, a lazy owner, or someone looking to cash in on their lucky score. At least clean up the car before you take it to the 2nd show.

I've driven "works in progress" rides to car shows before, but there would have been more improvements for the next week before it got showed again. More then a few have been to a show week after week, better each time. After a few weeks, when people see the ride, they come over to see what has been done since last week. For the most part, people love to see progress, and they tell you so.

If I would have come across this car at a show, I would have went over and looked at it. If a buddy was with me, we probably would have analyzed its condition and discussed what we might do if it was ours. If the next time I see it, and its the same, I probably won't be there long, and I probably won't look at it again until something improves.

For the record, until I read it here, I had no idea what that motor was for sure. I don't pay much attention to the new breads of motors (regardless of the brands), and I seldom see under the hoods of cars less then 15 years old.

I have the same at car shows or cruise in with my '65 F100

Folks will tell me Ford never made a 352 and I have a 351

Or the '65 352 had a one year bellhousing and such, wrong grill and so on

I just smile and say thanks for letting me know

Most are happy and tell me they wanted me to know so I was informed

To me, it seems some believe they know what they are saying is true even if not so

In my experience, Folks want to participate even if they have but a little knowledge

Then there are those have no clue but want to look smart and will tell you everything they know

Be kind to Folks, listen to them even if they are wrong .... you will make a Friend

Setting Folks straight sometimes leads to arguments, if they are wrong, some will never back down

My 65 F100 is flat black , Folks like it and gather around it with their boots on the bumper
Leaning on the bed ... I walk up and say "Hey" and smile

When they realize it is my truck, they move back and I say, put ya boots back an lean on it

Its a beater and meant to be driven in rain and leaned on... so get comfortable

  14. I also would not have known exactly what V8 engine that is. I have zero knowledge about new engines and they don't interest me.
At the beginning of the video when she tries to starts it one does not get the feeling that she herself knows much about her car.

Watched most of it and didn’t quite get it. I guess I’m getting too old.

  17. I'm not familiar with late model engines, wouldn't be able to accurately identify one.
I see plastic whenever I've lifted the hood on late models, not interested enough to look further.

So, I guess it is an LS engine? I guess it’s been converted with the distributor and intake?

I only ask because it doesn’t resemble my ‘03 PU engine at all.

  19. Interesting concept and use of technology with the go pro and mic. Kinda like spying. Not everyone can be an expert, but maybe they shouldn’t pretend to be an expert- “ people watching” taken to the next level.

  20. I didn't think any of the comments were all that off putting. Little kids say stuff like that all the time because they have no filter of age, they speak the truth most keep to themselves. My wife's car is a ratty stock original 56 Pontiac wagon, it gets all the same type comments. The car has an interesting factory build history that many get wrong (looks like a nomad but isn't, has many chevy attributes but is all Pontiac factory built. Basically a 55 chevy 150 wagon from the doors back on a unique chassis/floor pan with Pontiac front clip and interior.) But people generally like it because they see it as an achievable car, one they could actually afford to buy and then can think of what they would do to it. Kind of a blank slate. When the find out who the owner is the question usually is "is it for sale". The video car already has a theme working that may or may not work for everyone.

On the video, yes a total waste of time. YouTube is so much worse than network TV as a time waster and network TV is a terrible waste of time. I had a professor that at the beginning of the class told us to cut the cord off our TVs and that you could always re-attach it later when college was over. I have hardly watched any TV in the last 30 years, and I still can't manage to get stuff done.

I don't know about the girl and the car, but...
I wanted to kick the feet out from underneath that guy leaning on the fender.

I probably wouldn't last 5 minutes showing a car. LOL

Give the gal a break, looks like she’s trying to learn about old cars!
Her comments on the brakes, kinda sketchy, need to start applying them 200 ft away….I’m going to say compared to any modern appliance, they probably did feel sketchy when actually they were working as intended. How many times has it been said here, drum brakes stop different than discs? As young as she is, she’s probably never driven anything else with 4 wheel drums.
So, she had problems firing it off to start with, could have been a bad connection somewhere, old wiring, bad cell in the battery. How many times have you gotten into a vehicle that cranked over fine just the day before, but suddenly won’t do anything? Those little electrons sometimes have a mind of their own and don’t act like they’re supposed to! We’ve all had it happen! Hell, I’ve fixed a charging problem, left home thinking I was good, just for something else to cause the same problem, did I really fix it to start with or not?

The glass? Yeah, that’s tricky. I couldn’t tell if it was like bullet holes, or were there large chunks of glass missing? I drove my car around for two years after my windshield got a big piece of metal thrown into it. Mine split vertically in two lines, with a nasty depression in the center. Nothing in my normal line of vision. I took some clear packing tape and covered the dip inside and out, didn’t leak water or get any larger. Some will say too sketchy, yeah, I probably agree, but I knew it wasn’t going to lay inside on me. Just took a while to get the moon and stars to align where I could afford a glass and then put it in. But I doubt I’d have driven it if there had been gaping holes with shards hanging everywhere, I ain’t that dumb, lol.

If she’s real and this is not just fake TV look at me style crap, she’ll come around and learn. But if all she gets is caustic comments and insults, she will close her ears. She’s no Alex Taylor , but has the potential to be.

  23. I fully understand I like everything racecars, hot rods, kustoms, period correct muscle cars, and I fully agree there is a lot of stuff that shouldn’t be on the road.

I hold no ill will toward anyone one is retired, who has loads of money etc…as long as they are passionate about cars!

Most of my friends are retirement age or older, and I have said many times there are rich car guys, and then there are rich guys with cars.

In fact I told my buddy Dan I was looking for a 40 Ford front crossmember and spring, the last time I saw him he told me the found one and bought it, and since I had helped him out it was mine.

It seems like lately the comradely in racing and hot ridding is completely gone!
It has become an ego driven dick swinging contest.

    Hey @Crusty Chevy
I would have to agree about the various categories of content on YouTube, can be a major waste of time.
That being said, there are a few diamonds in the rough, worth viewing, especially if you can learn something.
I would suggest the cool videos from Matt Field AKA @Hitchhiker, the videos are Seattle Speed Shop,

    seattle speed shop rubber tire.jpg

And the very cool videos produced by Dave Engel, (Engels Coach Shop), who is a master fabricator and wood worker, blacksmith, and wheelwright. His video content, is straight forward and absolutely NO bullshit or drama.

The man is the genuine article.

I assure you, you WONT be disappointed.

    Thanks from Dennis.

I continue to go to local shows…sometimes 3 on a weekend. I only pay to put my car in 2, my Elks Lodge and the one at our large City Park. In this day and age many walking around have no idea what 50-60’s cars looked like and without reading emblems or badging don’t know one from another. That ok by me… they actually ask and appreciate what they see. They all like the interior colors and designs used back then for sure badmouthing the look-a-like cars of today.
Many remember an uncle or grandparents owning a car like them but not much. The guys “spouting knowledge” usually don’t have a clue when telling their walking buddy all about “my” car and model. I don’t say much other than when the friend looks at me I might shake my head or mouth “no”.
There was I time I got tired of looking a SBC’s under every hood and now it’s LS’s that need plastic covers to hide all the “crap” on new engines. SBC’s aren’t so bad any more.

Negativity in our hobby towards any other segment of our hobby is self defeating for the whole hobby. What will happen is that some segments will take off and thrive and others will disappear. While there are a lot of true statements in this thread, the thing I got out of it was that some younger people apparently like the older style hot cars (a good thing) and they have incorporated some of their ideas (LS engine) into it. They either like the patina or don't currently have enough money available to upgrade yet..........kinda like when we were kids and had to drive while building. I think it's pretty neat that some younger people have taken an interest in the same kind of cars we like, and are now getting other young people interested in pre-66 cars thru the miracle of U tube video. Quit being snobs and trying to find things wrong just because that isn't the way you would have done it.........Welcome them in and exchange some information with them about ....."back in the day". All the older people in the video that had no idea what type of engine was in the car............well reverse that and understand that the younger people didn't grow up"back in the day" and probably don't know anything about a flathead or a stovebolt or a even a nailhead Buick when they see one.
It's up to us to be more acceptable to what they are doing and share with them what we are doing......and why we do it that way.:)
