Good story! I had to laugh at " 0 to 83 in 30 seconds". Watching the F1 Monaco race late last night and seeing the MPH inside the cockpit as they were racing. Going from 80 to 150 in around a second going in and out of corners. How far we have come. Happy Memorial day Ryan!
Happy Memorial Day. Good health to everyone and thank you to those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and country.
Great story! Thanks to all who gave up their lives for our continued freedom. I cringe sometimes thinking of what we have done with this gift. RIP to all those who gave us a chance.
Great Story with a Sad Ending! HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY, HOME OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE! ALL GAVE SOME, SOME GAVE ALL!!! Have Fun...Be Safe!
Fun story, Ryan. It's such a somber holiday that I often feel a bit guilty saying "Happy" Memorial day, so let me say have a healthy, reflective day today.....Don.
As a Veteran who made it home alive remember there is a difference in how we honor folks on Memorial day, Veterans day and armed forces day. Today we honor those who lost their lives in battle or while on active duty and honor those veterans who have passed away. Don't thank me for my service today though as I am still very much alive.

One side of my family is almost entirely military. My cousin just left the Navy after a long career, multiple deployments, and a pretty damned high rank. A few things really piss him off that I don’t totally understand: 1. Vets that ask or expect special treatment because they served. (To me, they deserve it) 2. Vets that put stickers on their cars or wear hats, merch, etc… he believes once you are out, it’s over and you shouldn’t wear the “colors.” (I don’t get it) 3. Memorial Day. He fucking hates it, refuses to “celebrate” it, and doesn’t think it should be a holiday at all. (I totally get it)
As a fellow Veteran, I always like to post this picture of the American flag, that is attached to a big old tree out in a field around Sonoma California. Seems fitting for memorial day! Thanks from J.Dennis Hicklin. Specialist 4th Class, MOS "42D10" "Dental Lab Technician" U.S. Army, 72-75 Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Frick Tappet Motor Co in Connecticut made "Hot Rods" out of them by installing the 331 C.I. Cadillac engine in 49-51 Ford coupes like that. Be cool to do an article on them. The also later made Studelac's in the 53-55 Studebaker coupes. Thanks' to gave their lives so we can be FREE!
I'm not knocking what you said here but I do have my perspective. I know your Cousin has his reasons for what he believes and I have to agree with with him. For myself, a Veteran who demands for special treatment doesn't suit me. Take it if it's offered but don't demand it. Veterans who wear hats and other veteran related stuff have earned the right to wear what ever they want. It might be over the top and out of place sometimes but their war isn't over for them. They have the memories, the smells and the noises in their heads and those items that they wear might bring them comfort and pride. Visit a V.A. Hospital sometime and talk with the WW2, Korean and Viet Nam Veterans sometime and ask why they wear their stuff. Hell, it took me a few years to just hang my medal citations on the wall. I, myself, don't wear things and I don't have stickers on my cars but my '27 Coupe is going to be red and is going to be called "The Big Red One". Why? Because the 1st Infantry Division is one of my Combat Patches and is a favorite of mine. Most Veterans don't like Memorial Day, especially if we have lost a Brother or relative in Combat but it is a National Holiday that is for the fallen. I have visited the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier on a few occasions. I highly recommend it for those who have never been to Arlington National Cemetery. It'll give a person a new perspective. Believe me, once you're out of the military, you are never out. It's a part of your life and it will never go away. Trust me.
Ryan I agree with you on 1 and 2 but respectfully disagree with you on 3. I wholeheartedly believe that anyone that laid down their life for me, my family, friends and fellow countrymen deserves a day in their honor. For me it’s a day to reflect on my gratitude of these men and women. They gave all so we can have the freedom to think, say and do as we want. No small thing. Dan
I wear my USMC cover for one reason, I earned the right. Either way, pay respects on this solemn day of remembrance.
I "celebrate" Memorial Day every year---mix up a stiff drink, go to the garage where the one remaining semi hot rod sits, and toast my best service bud who did all the crazy hot rod things with me that I could think up. Included are the 5 members of my family who were vets, one killed in WW2 France. That flag on my house is there for a reason, a damm good one I think. That's my celebration.
I was never in the military, so I think I forfeit my right to have an opinion… I just appreciate all of em and respect whatever their varying opinions happen to be. My father-in-law, for instance, was in the air force… he’s got the sticker on his car, wears the hat, etc… and that’s fine by me. My cousin was special forces and served under much different circumstances, so I do understand how there could be such big differences in opinions on the matter. “Happy” this… “Happy” that… whatever. Hopefully y’all know me well enough to know what I mean.
I'm with you. I hate the Memorial and Veteran's Day sales. To have to load up on these dates is disparaging to me.
Maybe we should get this back on topic fellas. Post vet owned traditional hot rods - past and present.
I miss this guy Decorated Marine Guy was an encyclopedia of all things custom and hot rod. Using some parts I got from him on my merc I got a Merc flathead from him I’d love to use in a future build.
I Corps, Vietnam vet, drafted in 68.. Memorial Day is not one to say “happy” to. It is a day for reawakening memories of the ones who did not return alive. I came home in one piece and never asked the VA for more healthcare, though I accepted help paying for continued graduate level education. I have yet to wear anything that identifies me as a veteran 54 years later. I received my draft notice, I went, I did what I was told to do, and I came home after my service was completed. We veterans all have different views and life experiences. One’s is not right and another’s is not wrong. We served as Americans, doing our duty, and are still loyal Americans, democrats and republicans. Memorial Day is a day to honor those who didn’t make it back.
