    Thanks Tom. I have enjoyed all the truck builds on the HAMB. They are all different as are their owners, and each one reflects the builder's "eye". It's like giving a block of marble to a group of sculptors and telling them to go at it. You are going to get a lot of different variations on the theme. I like them all.

    That truck is a stunner, though, early on as you were contemplating the panel striping, I had my "thoughts", but it's perfect!

    Thanks Douglas. I am booking an appointment with Mitch to get the roadster over there this summer. I had some lines put down but it needs Mitch's hand and eye.
     
  4. I'd go with the 'measured mile' method. That way you don't have to fiddle with the gauge while moving. Establishing the mile somewhere on a less-traveled road would be the worst part, but a couple of traffic cones (or other suitable markers) and a GPS app should take care of that. Or if you want to go 'old school', you could buy or rent one of these... measuring wheel - Google Search
    One advantage to those is you could calibrate one pretty easily with a 25' tape measure and possibly get more accurate results compared to GPS.

    If your phone has Google Maps, it has a GPS speedo function you can activate, as described in the link below.

    I don't use a drive thru I walk in, waste of gas, especially if your A/C isn't working...

    The measured mile will be difficult without making a few laps of the subdivision. And I run the risk of the neighbors wanting to chat and thinking I am rude if I drive past without stopping. :cool:
    The GPS app on the phone I hadn't considered. I could have wife watch the phone while I drive (or vise versa). :D
    I think the lack of correct speed signal is causing a strange shift in the transmission. The 46RE (R is for rear wheel drive, E is for electric) uses a small brain from CompuShift. It handles down shifts and over drive and is connected to the speedo. Because the speedo is reading 25, it is doing some strange stuff. I decided to stop driving until I calibrate the speedo. Should be nice tomorrow so that is my first task.

    I wouldn't say I'm an enabler (or pussywhipped) but my wife has a way of hinting after she has done something nice for me, she'd say "she sure could use some coffee" then, I'll say I don't want to go to DB, of course, that's right after I say "what size Kicker" do you want?

    Personally, I would go with the tried-and-true method of measuring the circumference of the tire and putting a hash mark on the sidewall. Then drive for a known distance such as one way to your local beer store, with your wife hanging out the window counting the wheel's revolutions and checking a stopwatch. After arriving at the store, send her in for beer while you make the necessary calculations to determine your true rate of speed. There, it wasn't so difficult after all;).

    You aint rufflin my feathers! It used to cost $4 for a medium iced coffee/sugar free and non fat. Yesterday it was $8.40 and then they ask you to add a tip. $10.00 coffee?!!
    I heard that coffee prices where up 300%. The morons running the FED want to drop it from the inflation calculation so the numbers don't look so bad. I am thinking about dropping it from my expenses altogether. That's 2 gallons of 92 octane!
    Beer you say? Hmmm.

    I think about how much I save by making my own coffee, I can spend it on fishing gear.

    That's only about 6 cups of coffee. I saw a sign the other day that read, "Alcohol is a magical liquid that allows you to borrow happiness form tomorrow morning".

    Well crap. I went out to calibrate the speedo and it seemed to be working, when I was complete I pressed and held the button for 6 seconds and for some reason the tach needle is now on the wrong side of the peg! It was working fine but now it won't (can't) move at all. I may have to wait until Monday unless one of you has had a similar issue???

    I got the needle back around where it is supposed to set using a magnet. Rest the gauges to factory specs, now I can calibrate that speedo...again.

    One of the final steps, charge the AC. A buddy turned me on to a mobile tech that came out this morning.

  18. That's odd. I'm used to seeing a Vacuum pump connected for to a fresh new system to pull it down before the gas is charged into the system. Is that something not needed anymore with the gasses?

    I believe he may be leak checking the system with an argon or nitrogen purge (inert gas, also removes moisture in system, prior to vacuuming down as it makes the vacuum pump's job much easier) prior to charging with refrigerant.

    You know my hearing is not all that without my ears in, but he explained that...I think. He said if I had taken the truck to Jiffy Lube they would vacuum test and charge it and I'd be back in a year with no AC.

    He uses gas to check for leaks that has the same characteristics as the charge gas (liquid, vapor, liquid) and under the same pressure. Because metals and rubber react to cold and heat differently, this can show a leak or a potential leak that vacuum would/may not. And, as a result he found a couple, and the potential for others. (there's a good chance I didn't get all that right but that is what I heard...I think :cool:)

    He had rave remarks for Vintage Air, their receiver/dryer and condenser (best on the market he said) and the genuine Sanden compressor. But...if he had known me at the time he would have told me to throw the Vintage AC hoses and fittings in the trash and he would of supplied the lines.

    He said the VA hoses are cheap, he showed me what he uses, and they resemble hydraulic lines (wrapped exterior rather than smooth, with a fibrous layer. The crimping device VA rented me allowed some of my crimps to be over-crimped and others under-crimped. The result is leaking or soon to be leaking connections. He thought my install was great and thought out and fairly serviceable.

    He has to order 2 new 180 degree fittings for the Sanden, as he doesn't stock those, but he agreed they look best in this application. He is going to move the charging ports (currently in those 180 fittings) so they are not on top of the compressor (too much vibration and heat cycling) while he is at it. Basically, he is going to re-make all the hoses using mine as templates.

    Oh well, I don't need AC for another couple of months (wishful thinking). My Black Silverado would SUCK without AC, this little black truck will be nicer with a properly charge climate control system.

    I mapped out a one mile course in my subdivision using my Silverado and then took the 41 on the same route to calibrate the speedo. You have to make sure that button makes contact, I found I had to jiggle it a bit and press firm, but it worked!

    More advise on the button, where ever your key is (mine is on the left) install the button on the opposite side on the dash. To enter the calibration mode you have to hold that button while starting the car. That gets tricky if you install the button near the ignition switch.

    This is on my way to work this morning. 60 MPH at 1800 RPM. T's & P's lookin good. That's a 3:70 9" Posi back there. Cool.

    I have done a few of those speedo calibrations. Some were easy some took several tries. The tough ones are the ones that use dip switches. I have a speedometer check area just outside of town. You know the ones with mileage markers on the side of the road. It also helps that there is plenty of room on the shoulder to allow me to pull over to the ignition switch and button dance. check area goes on for five miles so if you don't get it right the first time you just pull over, reset and try again. I also use my Garmin to check my speed after a calibration adjustment. The Garmin is actually very accurate.

    It good to see you having so much fun testing, tuning and debugging you 41. It's good to hear Mrs. Bandit likes the truck and wants to drive it!

    It's debugging pretty quick. I was at a show the other night and my hand bumped the wiper switch which of course turned them on. Seems they weren't on park when I installed the arms, so they ended up off the windshield and on the paint. Pulled them off when I got home and reinstalled them and all is fine. I did have to polish out the scratch int he clear coat though.

    I did haul some lumber in the bed yesterday. :cool: Does this count as being used a truck? Yeah, my wife made me use a blanket so I wouldn't scuff her wood up, but at least it didn't have duckies on it (or that damn Philadelphia Eagles blanket she owns). First 100 miles on the clock and all is well. I'm about ready to drain the break in oil and fill it with 20/50 Valvoline.

  30. Um...uh...NO!! Show us a picture of a refrigerator or a lawn mower in the bed, THOSE would count! Maybe a few bales of hay.... or a couch!! And since it's a shop truck, how 'bout a flathead short block?
