The locals already know but for the rest that may not we have had a local cruise in event at Portland International Raceway, every Wednesday evening during the summer for 29 years! And most may have heard this will be the final season under the guidance and coordination of Mark Mathias the owner of Beaches Restaurant. 1/8th mile drag, live music, food, beer and spirits. Classic cars, Vettes and Harleys.

The fun begins next Wednesday, June 6th. The weather looks to be sunny and 77 degrees for the high. Gates open at 4:00 but if this opening night is like those of past years, be there early. It is not uncommon to see 2000 cars show up, I bet it is more next week.

I will take as many HAMB worthy pictures as possible and I welcome anyone else attending to do the same and post 'em here. Wax the car, bring some water, wear sensible shoes and a hat and enjoy.

How about a HAMB roll call? Who is going? Whatcha bringin? Maybe we should have a HAMB drag race night at some point this summer? It is a sanctioned track and they do safety checks BTW. Opening night though is all about the cars.

Admission is $5.00 car and driver, additional passengers $5.00, kids free. Racing is $10.00

    See you at the show.

Got to be one of the best gatherings in the country. Sure hope it’s not the last season.

I’m a little concerned about that rain coming in Sunday thru Tuesday. That grass gets a little swampy but I’ll go if it’s a go.

  6. Grandpa and I are planning on it, already got some PTO in so we can get out there early. Dont know what we will take yet, but something blue, lol. My guess is my C10, but could bring the Camaro as the next easiest to get out.

Went a number of times with my friend in his 502 powered Chevy II, one year we got a late start and somewhere around the Rose Quarter at rush hour things got "heated" and evasive action was required, some maneuvering and "spirited" driving ensued.
    That was fun!

We just come over Germantown Rd. over the St. Johns Bridge, past the old Radke building.

My older brother was a Portland policeman out of North precinct in the late 60's/70's, I heard a lot of stories about chases on snow covered Germantown Rd. must have been fun in those big lumbering Plymouths.

I am thinking we pick a time to meet under the trees across from the grandstand, for a HAMB gathering.

  12. not much fun now as once you get closer to HWY 30, they installed speed bumps all the way down the hill to where you can get on the bridge. Did that to stop guys drifting.

Im all for it, talked to grandpa and he cant come now so Ill just be wandering around anyways.

I’m in. Wednesday will be the 5th of June in my universe, but still a Wednesday.

I like the idea of a HAMB gathering. You bring the gavel and the top hat.

Opening night always has the Slo Poks as the featured club. As a group, they have the nicest cars, in my opinion. I will probably drive my late friend Ernie’s Roadster. IMG_2790.jpeg

  21. Dang, that is coming right up. I seldom do static car shows but ya never know. I hate it when people point and say things like "look at that" then go get into their Mini-Van or Toyota.

If I don’t get stuck working late, I’ll try to make it. I need another fix to keep the fire lit.

Ya probably, I don't do too many of these things but Mark has done a whole lot of good for our community and he puts the Slo Poks out front every year so I will support this especially since it will be the last season for Beaches, at least in the form it is now.

Tim, GV, hope to see you both there. I doubt I went to more than one last year myself. The opener is always fun and yes, the Poks get to park under the trees!

I will be there as I attend every Wed. afternoon each year. Not sure if I'll be driving my '39 Chev gasser, or my old Austin gasser?
As for the Beaches show in general, I was told that Mark has already found another to take it over and keep it going, so this wont be the end this year!

See you there then! Since the Pos will be under the trees and they always bring cool toys to play with, why don't we have a meet up for the HAMB folks on the corner under the big elm. @Tim_with_a_T what time do you think you will make it?

Realistically, I'll be parking outside the show around 5:30, walking in and ready to mingle by 6? Not sure if that's too late. Don't wait for me!
