The only two places I have ever seen this guy mentioned is in OSR and CKD, and they constantly treat his name as if its a household name in the custom scene, only it seems that outside of those 2 magagazines, his name never comes up. In one issue they even list him in the same short list of world renound customizers as Gene Winfield. Now come on, I have seen pics of this Bo Huff guys cars, and they dont exhibit any of the geniouse that Windfield can produce, nice cars, but not anything out of this world. Im not knocking the guy, because I really have no idea who he is. Is he real Kustom legend, or just a figment of those 2 magazines imaginations?

  2. I'm not sure, but here is some Bo Huff info on these sites:

Having met ol Huff a couple of times now, I'd say he makes some pretty rad shit in my book. I like his style. I dont really compare any car builder with another cause its all apples to oranges. But in my book he is a real custom car dude with alot of neat builds. Cool stuff from the 50's and 60's. Good guy too.

Famous indeed, his work is top notch level for sure. I think alot of the ideas suck, but thats just me personally. There were a few things on the Cameltoe (Mercury) that I thought were cool, but by and large I wasnt into it. Synthesis...he has/had a pretty cool 53 Merc mild kustom (flamed) that was pretty cool, check it out if ya can.

Imagine that, I've never read either of the mags you mentioned yet not only have I heard of him, I've visited his shop, his museum, his private junkyard, seen many handfuls of his hot rods and customs in person AND have seen him in person at many shows all around the country:rolleyes:

May I suggest you stop spending all your time on the OSR website and more time on the HAMB and other sites that might actually broaden your horizons.;) :D

The last time I ran into Bo was in Mitchell, SD last Sept at the Outcasts Car Show. I believe he was a special guest at that show again this year.

Im not debating that really. I know he's sure as hell better than me at building a custom, and I like his cars, but they look to me like nicely done owner built cars.

Windfield, or Cole Foster, or any of the current, or old masters/professional builders build to a totaly different level.

Those 2 magazines just treat the guy like he's a housold name ( like the 2 mentioned above truely are) in the custom builcing scene, and it just seems kinda "made up" to me. Im not trying to be mean or anything, it just seems to me that if he was as renound as they say he is, you would hear mention of his work in other places, on a regular basis.

  10. A friend of mine knows him pretty well. I wasn't much for the Cameltoe merc either, but can appreciate the effort that goes into it. I do like most of the rods i've seen in the mags that he has built.

Bo Huff isn’t a household name? That’s news to me.

You are missing the wide scope of the man if you are judging from a couple of publications that have featured his work. ESPECIALLY the 2 rags that you mention.

He's just your average guy, just like the legends, who builds cars because he likes them.

I've met him, been to his place, and seen his cars. He's down to earth and lives in the middle of no where.

The first thing I thought of after seeing all his cars was "Why have I never seen any of these cars before?" I don't think he's ever gotten any big publicity until recently.

Some of his cars are realy cool with some nice touches and some are a bit over the edge. If there as nice or as cool as some of the legends, would just be another opnion.

Really, Im not trying to be argumentative. I dont go to the OSR forum, trust me, Im a firm believer in the HAMB. I do however buy most of the magazines. I have my own opinions on the quality and shorcomings of each of the magazines, but I buy the ones that have articles that I think will be interesting.

Mixed in with all of the filler in the two above mentioned magazines, there is every once in a while a good article on a nice car. I buy the issues that feature nice customs, as thats what Im into. The whole root of this post is that many of those articles I purchased those magazines for were ones on Bo Huff cars, and they sure do show his stuff a lot. Most likely the wording of their articles is a little exagerated (I think 90% of the contents of the 2 magazines is). Im sure he's a good guy, does good work, and is a creative guy, but if YOU DID read the articles on him in CKD or OSR, you may get the impression that they are refering him to a custom GOD. I dont think he has quite reached that level. With the pedistol they put the guy on, you'd think his name should be plastered everywhere!

Otherwise, Ive never heard mention of him anywhere else (including the HMAB of course), sorry for my ignorance!

I saw his Merc and a few others at the Rocabilly Hot Rod Reunion last yeat, and thought his stuff kicked butt! Now, to me, he is famous.

  16. Get your head out of the magazines and away from the computer.
You'll find all kinds of guys out there, beside the big names.
Most including Bo Huff are down to earth guys.
    Who still work on cars.

Magazine articles are on people the editors know or are available at the time.

I've known Bo since at least 1992...did an article on him in a mag... I've seen him build some really great cars over the years...and have had a beer or three with him...

He IS just an average Joe...works out of an old gas station in East Carbon/Sunnyside, UT...not a 10,000 square foot showroom...he builds kustoms and old style rods...and does it quite well.

Most people west of the Mississippi know Bo...it's just that the east coast seems to finally know of him...and if some magazine was willing to prop me up on pedestal and salute me, I'd go along with it...maybe the rest of the country will finally learn of Bo Huff's building skills and put him in with the rest of the "known' builders.

  18. At the HAMB drags I asked the same question, except I hadn't seen those magazines. I've only heard of him here on the HAMB.

  19. Maybe so. Seems like R & C uses George Poteet as their go-to-guy. Difference being that the article usually says built by Bo Huff and built for George Poteet.

  20. I guess if you do your own work like Bo does, you can't spend all that time markieting your shit like Boyd. Boyd's shop turns out some cool megabuck cars but Bo turns out some cool cars of his own.

Cool, Thanks for the replies. I had no animosity at all toward the guy, just wondering who he was. I'll have to look for more of his builds.

Saw his rides at the same show and they kick ass, I am a fan of his work. My freind Jason won Best of Show last year at the Rockabilly Rod Reunion but we were kind of bummed that when it featured in Deluxe or OSM, there was tons of pics of Bo but not one of my buddy's car. We suspect the easter egg primer he picked is the reason his car was not shown. Spoke with my buddy again today and he said he will be there next week for sure. Shows are very scarce in Vegas and he goes to just about any traditional car shows there. two good ones to be exact.

Last question, The Road Devils are not hosting this show this year, word around the campfire is that he took that show over. Is this true? Is he working side by side with LVMS? I do not know if this is true or not but would like some insight anyone might be able to offer.

    Peace~Al "chevnut"

  26. I know Bo quite well, he's been graciuos enough to let me stay at his house ate some of Liz's good cooking and drank a number of beers with him. He is a stand up guy, who builds quality cars that are now just barely getting recognition. Its not that he is new or a backyard home builder per say, he just moved away from Ca. when all this was lowkey and started up shop in middle of nowhere Utah. Now his good friend buick59 on here used to work for OSR for awhile and of course shot all of Bo's cars some made it into the mag and voila those publications rolled with Bo and are now making him some $$ I hope. Those mags are a fad, the fame Bo is having in those mags will die down but Bo will not he will still keep on building those mercs he loves so much with style some I dont like but style none-the-less. Bo is a good person thats all you need to know, and yes his work is compareable to those names you have mentioned I am pretty sure they would agree as well.

Common Chad , Its ok that you dont know who he is or what he is in the custom world . There are tons of great car builders who never will get the recognition of Floyd Cotterpin. The post about building cars rather than marketing oneself is a great one.

Uh, was I making fun of the guy? Was I insulting his cars? Was I comparing him to myself? No. Why the attitude? Sorry, I was ignorant to the guys existance outside the pages of 2 magazines who's content has to be taken with a grain of salt.

Sorry I dont type as accurately as you may. Maybe Im even a bit dislexic. I cant spell too well either. So keep tearing me apart. Trust me, there are guys here with much worse command of the english language than myself for you to make fun of. I dont insult them though, I thaught this was a car board, not a typing contest.
