IMO it happened because the press was acting as Jim Wanger's personal stenographer.

  2. OF, you're comparing apples to oranges here.
    1,
The MW cars came out of the Chrysler racing program. Notice factory cut-outs, battery in the trunk, etc.
By 1964 , GM and Pontiac were out of racing.
2, The muscle car discussion is not about elapsed times. The 62 Tempests and SD 421 Cats could outrun the 64 GTO's too , as could the 63 Swiss cheese 421 Cats, Same goes for the LW Galaxies and Thunderbolts, which were not showroom available to many dealers.
3, The 64 GTO was meant to be a powerful, intermediate street cruiser, and it outsold all the above mentioned drag race cars by miles.
4, The print media coined the term "muscle car" in the mid 60's to describe the big engine /intermediate size cars that were available to the general public. Muscle car was not used before then.
If some people want to use the name retro-actively , be my guest but you would be incorrect.
5, BTW, the 1963 426 MW was available in station wagons. Would they be muscle cars too? ;-)

The '62 and '63 MW cars were sold to the public and were street legal cars. And many were street driven even the station wagons, including me in one of the mid size cars.

You're just grouping for straws as many have done in past to continue the myth. I've had enough of this since you won't accept prof of reality and agree with @GearheadsQCE above time to drop this back and forth.

A friend of mine who recently passed, bought a 63 Dodge MW Automatic car new. Drove it to work with 3.23 gears M-F, went home on Friday, swapped the rear-end gears to 4.56 then went racing Saturday and Sunday. Sunday night, switched back to 3.23 gears and drive to work again. He traded the 57 Corvette fuelie he bought new for it, devoted MoPar guy from that day forward, Truly a muscle car. The car still exist and in nice condition.

  24. I notice you didn't answer this (# 5 ) I guess you figure muscle cars can be anything with a big motor..Again, you'd be wrong, by the historical definition.

The 389 tri-power and 4 speed option was also available in both full size Pontiac’s and station wagons. Based on that, maybe the GTO wasn’t a muscle car since the engine was available in the full lineup if that disqualifies the 62 Plymouth and Dodge models. The wheelbase for the 64 GTO and 62 Plymouth were 1” apart from each other, roughly the same size car. As far as considering a MW wagon as a muscle car, it’s a mean car but doesn’t fit the true definition, the 62 MW Plymouth and Dodge B-Body cars do fit the description.
1962 413 MW cars, which started this, had the battery mounted under the hood, not in the trunk as referenced in a previous post.
