Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by loveoftiki, May 14, 2024.

  1. Ehh just another day at the local track with a top PS car out doing some racing…amazing to think this was not out of the ordinary…today you only see a car of this caliber at a giant national event, along with giant Teams and Rigs…can we go back in time please…

While Mustang II do not get much respect other than their contribution to street rods they do make some nice looking race cars. IMG_3572.jpeg IMG_3577.jpeg

I didn't know the "Grump" had a Camaro of this vintage. Clearly he'd been kickin ass with the Vegas for a notable time. This makes me think it was the comeback of the big block Pro Stock with the late 70s body and the Dominator carbs.

Thanks to @richnapp on IG for the shagged pic.

The 4-door Maverick and the “new” but old 1970 Mustangs of Glidden and Nicholson came about from wheelbase/engine rules for different combinations by the nhra. Cube per cube I don’t think anybody was going to outrun Glidden or the Cleveland engine.

I like the way racers (Dyno Don) did things back then. CNC porting? Break out the die grinder and start experimenting.

Kevin and Greg Flaherty's Shotgun XB Falcon hardtop Pro Stock. This was the car to beat as the Cleveland heads breathed much better than the Chevy stuff available at the time and there was no weight penalty as there was for the Fords in NHRA at the time. Greg is at the wheel and his dad Kevin is behind the car with the flat cap and shades. The car got its name from the fact the Kevin was a national skeet shooting champion. I originally thought that this photo was from Castlereagh but looking closer I think that it is from a major event at Adelaide as evidenced by the fans in the background who are on the perimeter of the oval track.

I think 800 in or so was the limit allowed. Most of the time in those early days they had a towel hiding the intakes

The piedmont area of NC had it's share of pro racers back in the day. Plus the NASCAR shops of Petty and Labonte where I was fortunate enough to be able to walk in and have rods shot peened , items welded and at Labonte' shop they fabbed up a new trunk floor for a Duster to hold a fuel cell for $35.00 . But that was forty five years ago, lol . Plus we had another guy named Gary Dehart who was a top notch fabricator. Our local speed shop was the Hot Rod Barn .[IMG]
