Funny story, I bought those TC slicks and took them up to the local tire store to have them mounted. The owner said, "we don't like making a habit out of mounting internet tires that we could have sold". I said nothing, dropped the tailgate, and he saw the slicks and barked for one of the busters to get them mounted.

I have a couple thousand or more miles on my TC's and I am still pleased. Kinda like gremlins though (the movie thingies not the AMC cars) don't get them wet.

I don’t know the exact weight, but would guess the mounted wheel is close to fifty pounds. I also have set M/T slicks mounted up that are half the weight of Towel City.

I am not a small man. That said I like using a floor jack when removing and installing them. On a fenderless car a cherry picker can come in handy.

It's a bit like Al Bundy picking up one his lady shoe customers.

I wonder how they compare to the Radirs as far as weight goes? I looked for weights online, but no bueno.

I would imagine that would depend on what casing was used.

Since Towel City slicks aren't recapped casings there's nothing that depends on what casings are used. They only build their slicks on new casings, so the only change in weight depends on what size tire you buy.

Unless that is something new I think it may be incorrect. When I bought mine a couple years back, there was an up charge for new casings, the advertised price was used casings. It was not much more so I paid it. Maybe they only use new casings now? Hmmm

That was correct at one time. But in 2021-22 they decided to not sell anymore recaps. I had a pair that were recaps on my '39 and lost one to a failure. When I called to get it replaced he told me they no longer sold any recaps, so I got two new tires with one at sale price and the other free under warranty.
So they no longer offer the choice of used tires, and only build on new casings. I've got a spare brand new recap sitting in my storage shed as I have them on my Austin gasser, and they're 14 yrs. old now with no issue. Took it off when I went to new slicks and decided it might be worth keeping, but never needed it yet.

Right, when I bought mine they did both but I knew they changed to only new casings.

A good move on their part. I'm glad to hear they changed the process.

  17. I was considering Towel City slicks for my Mysterion reproduction until I ran into a set of new/old Inglewood Pos-A-Traction slicks on ebaY! Towel Cities are about the closest to the vintage look I needed but my find was a perfect solution.

Big Daddy Roth had a funny comment on those recap slicks. From Thacker's book - "Ya gotta remember in them days there was no sucha' thing as goin' down to your local Super Shop and pickin' up on tires and rims. We hadda get the slicks from this place called Inglewood Tire Co. They made tires for dragsters and what they'd do is take a stock wide whitewall and put a humungous band of rubber around it & with heat apply it to this stock tire. It was pretty grossed out but that is all there was."
