Technical ‘41 Chevy coupe gasser

Hello all. It’s been a long time since I’ve been on the HAMB. I have a question. I’m thinking of converting my ‘41 Chevy coupe into a gasser and I want to do it as old school as possible. Does anyone know the best axle and leaf springs to use? Thanks in advance.

 

Welcome to the Hamb Clutch2.....Speedway makes good kits for the money...disc brakes , all hardware...you have to use a GM steering box which they sell too..post some pics and introduce yourself to the members..lots of nice folks here ..

 

Speedway kit will work fine. They sell a 1/4" wall tube.

A Chevy truck front axle and leaves would be an appropriate addition. I have seen a couple of complete set-ups for sale recently, where are you located?

 

Leave the outside of the car the way it is except for the front bumper removed..That would like amazing...gassed out and completely stock......Now...get busy....

 

I was thinking of that too. Maybe ‘41 - ‘ 46 chevy 1/2 ton. I think the springs aren’t parallel. Both frame rails taper in. I’m in Maryland.

Had a 40 I wanted quick but not a full gasser. Rear end--Ford Explorer cut to center the pinion--3:73 Ptrac gear, bolted to old set of Posie's (not sure) teflon button springs that just bolted in to stock mounts. Front end old corvair (done years earlier) w/ mustang 2 discs, Pbrakes. Warm but not super hot 355 chevy w/ worked 700r4. Weight-3050, very low 13's, high 12's and totally neat for street. Forgot, had a/c and p/s and full interior. Never feared a stoplight.

 

Good looking coupe. I’m not 100% sure but I think’41-‘48’s were a little wider than the ‘37-‘40’s.

 

A Chevy truck axle will be too wide for a '41 Chev coupe. I put one in my '39 Chev gasser and had to narrow it 5" to sit properly and not have the front tires sit out too far. A '41 really isn't any wider than my '39.

Those year truck axles are of course tougher to convert to 5 lug, or disc brakes, so not what I would choose to use. They are narrower, so might fit under your '41 better, but might be more work to convert.
I've used a lot of '49-'59 Chev truck axles and they are very easy to convert to 5 lug, and use passenger car drums, or readily available disc brake parts to convert. You'll need to compare truck width to your car's width before deciding which donor axle works. Or just get the Speedway axle kit in the width you need.
As much as I love gassers, I'm not sure I could take a car as nice as yours and build a gasser out of it?

 

Thank you. It’s got rust in the typical areas. But it runs good and the vacuum shift still works. It looks much better in the pic than up close. I was just thinking about changing it a little. I’ve had it for 20 years.
