You can also set up the puller under stress and put a bit of heat on the drum at the taper. The drum will heat & expand before the axle.
I have saved pix of hub pullers over the years. Most came from here but some probably came from the Fordbarn. PM me your email address and I'll reply with about 50 pix of pullers; most homemade. EDIT EDIT EDIT I started a thread with these pix a while back. I'm doing this on a phone and can't open multiple windows. When I get to my computer I'll post a link but for now you can find it by searching for "puller" in "***les only" and started by me.
I live self-made tools. I’ll definitely search out the thread. In the meantime, Zach @SUHRsc lent me a hub puller AND a steering wheel puller. Soup community is the best community, and a big part of making these cars achievable for a knucklehead like me.
Glad you were able to borrow a hub puller. For anyone interested here's the hub puller thread: Technical - many pix of early Ford hub-drum pullers; mostly home made | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com) And many of these were also posted in this thread by oldrelics: TECH - lo-buck early Ford hub / drum puller | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
However... I can't put a nut on the spindle. The spindle is up in the body of the puller. I tightened and whacked with a hammer. I'm worried about mushrooming the spindle end. That's how I f’ed up the Oldsmobile
Ok. They’re off. Heat index is now 112*, I’m puking, lightning has started, and I only smashed one finger and burnt myself twice. That was a lovely two hours.
This weather is BS. I was outside moving some things around, thought I was going to p*** out. You'll have start working at night...
A pleasant surprise. Looks like I can clean up, lube, adjust, and put on the new cast drums and bearings that our friend Joey @J.Ukrop generously gave to the project. I heard a rumor he abandoned mechanical brakes for juice…
Back to musing on tires and wheels and caps… I’d love to run 600/650 Blockley rears, but just cannot swing it financially right now. Most economical option is to run stock ‘33-‘34 525/550-17 Lucas Olympics on all 4 corners. People seem to like the Lucas tires. Coker is offering free shipping at the moment and with the HAMB Alliance discount, there’s some deals. A set of Lesters could be swung and they have an excellent rep for a great driving tire. Very plain sidewalls though. Black wheels? Orange? Depends on body color… they’ll get black for now. Caps… V8 or other caps? Hmmmm….
Well done on popping the tapers, I like running V8 caps on my banger, makes people guess, did you notice you don't have a v8, so you really want a V8? All that stuff to gift a smile if people notice. As for the tyres, nothing else to add
I'd have to see a picture of the Lucas 17"s. Some of the most out of proportion tire & wheel sets I've seen have been 17" & 16" Ford spokes. It can be done but the smaller you go the tougher it gets. Wheels & stance- your eye can't get past it.
I’m definitely leaning V8 caps. It’ll really come down to what I can find. There’s a ton of historical do***entation of banger cars running V8 caps and it’s definitely a talking point. These are the Lucas tires. I have two 17” wheels with rotten tires in this size mounted. 525/550 is about 28”. I’ll mock something up once I have the rear drums on. Bare ch***is, red wheels, no caps, rotten tires… yeah, why not. I think I’d like to run a 600/650 in the rear… that’s a 30” tire. But… I just can’t swing the Blockleys right now… and… while running a tall “jumbo” tire on the lakes was common, I’m not entirely sure about a road car.
Just so we all understand how the luck flies here at Spencer Garage… I had my radiator shell and apron all cleaned up and ready for paint. Good weather. Got set up on my pallet in the shade and three nice coats of rattlebomb gloss black went down well enough. Ran an errand. Lawn guy came while I was away from the house.
Then… I got the cast drums from Joey @J.Ukrop fitted with bearings, seals and rings. Easy enough. Took a little time to get the drums on. Key kept falling out, etc. Shoes are backed all the way off. Drums took some persuasion with a block and mild whacks from a mallet to get on over the shoes… same as the fronts. Fiber washer, washer, axle nut. Driver side drags A LOT. Right side I cannot budge. Completely locked up. Good grief…
Some days the amount of 'stuff' that comes against 1 person or situation seems incredibly out of balance, you know, the only time this much bad stuff that happens at one time, or consistently is only found in a script.... It's like it's being orchestrated On another note, at work we will re shoe brakes, machine a drum, measure the dia of the drum then 'radius' the shoes(with a router on a home made jig, bolted to the axle/stub) to an approximate fit, try the drum till it goes on then use chalk to check for high spots. As for getting the drum off, remember that the shoe will '****' over jamming the drum, rotating the drum while removing may help??? I look forward to hearing how you go.
Hey Ryan. I am certainly not laughing at you, or the plight of the freshly painted radiator shell. My friend, what you have posted a picture of, is an organic version of retro "ZOLATONE" splatter paint! You can look that up, and when you see pictures of what that is/was, then you will get a good laugh at my description. "Perfection, cannot be rushed" Keep at it Ryan and Spencer, this project is worthy of your time and patience! Thanks from Dennis. "FOD" is "Foreign objects and debris" A concept, not easily embraced by lawn janitors!
Yeah… I have 2.5 MILES of public trails, 6 acres of meadow, 12 acres of wetland, a trout stream and 10 acre of riparian woodland on our property that I take care of. I let someone else mow the small yard so I have time to do all the other landowner tasks.
