70 awards but only one DEUCE DOIN'S PICK at each show. I'd call that 1st place. As long as I am reminiscing out in la-la land. BEST BITCHIN' award is usually won by a car costing 6 figures. I am quite proud of MEGUIARS MAGNIFICENT MASTERPIECE award. [44 PU ] TOP FIVE PICK -[ 30 lakes modified ] Detroit Speed BUILDERS CHOICE [ 33 Willys. ] Ancient history I know. 2004-01-22 04.36.39.jpg 2004-01-22 04.39.16.jpg

Not everyone gets the "friends and family" discount!

Regardless of the cost of parts today vs the costs when you built it, the car you won the Deuce Doin's Pick with is exceptional by any standard. You have every right to be proud of that accomplishment.

"3/4 of the way to the trophy". THANKS Gene. Now my head is swelled bigger than ever. PS; No parts were on hand laying around. This was my 1st hot rod build.

Sorry I wasn't into taking a lot of pictures back then. The rear suspension is ladder bars made from stainless steel pipe given to me by the plumber across the street. He gave me the stainless steel pipe for the hair pins and tie rod also. The new 32 will be just a bit lower. It also is ladder bar car. 2" shorter grille shell and 1 " narrower than a 32 2024-03-03 21.48.23-2.jpg

I 100% agree. I've pinched every nickel on mine and almost everything is "tested" parts. You can build really cheap but I think few of us believe you can buy a donor car for a couple hundred bucks and use the entire driveline, wiring and interior and come up with anything near what Frames shows here. That deuce is damn nice, glass or not.

LOL, the engine in it, the 276 that ended up in the roadster, to make way for a highly off-topic new engine (it does have a Hemi in ;)) the car is very much intact and driven regularly. Thanks.

  13. I'm not sure where you came up with that. Sure, 6-figure cars occasionally win it, but so do plenty that don't cost near that much.

Here's an example of a '32 that won a "Best Bitchin'" award that definitely isn't a 6-figure car. This car is local to me. https://www.instagram.com/p/CfxYa7wu6Jc/

Here's Model A, which won TWO awards at this particular GG's show. https://www.flickr.com/photos/daddio/4860570880/

1990 I purchased 5 Kansas Halibrand 201 kits to get the dealer price at $1,100.00 each. Doner rear ends were $100.00 back then. Wheels on the original build were chrome steelies. A S C frame rails. I purchased 5 pairs to obtain the dealer price. Trucker friend hauled for free. 8 QC center sections. JM QC 001.JPG

I don't travel to win awards. Charlotte 7 miles away OK. Now Raliegh 3 hours away. I went once for the swap meet. What a dissapointment. Did not take a hot rod. Got their at 9 AM left at 11 AM. Won't ever go back.

The other thing about Goodguys awards is they put a piece of paper on your car that you've won, I believe on Saturday. If you can't attend the award ceremony Sunday, you can't receive the award. Winning an award doesn't necessarily mean you were the "best" car in that category at the show, you were just available on Sunday afternoon. Is it prestigious to win? Absolutely. But it's not exactly what it seems at first.

So you had no parts laying on hand, but you built the car in 1997 and bought 5 quick changes in 1990. But you built the car for $15K, despite getting buddy discounts, dealer discounts, and not having to pay for shipping. Sounds like the parts alone would have cost anyone else a lot more. Makes it seem like you're bragging about having the parts volume to buy stuff cheaper than others.

They used to put a sticker on one of your headlights. At Pleasanton in ‘98, I walked back to my car to find 3 stickers. I found out later that they only allow you to win 2. The awards included Street Rodder Top ten, Jack’s pick, and Highboy Heaven. Since it was a T Track Roadster, I shouldn’t have qualified for Highboy Heaven, but they awarded it along with Street Rodder Top ten. I felt guilty taking that award away from some of the nicest 32’s on this earth, and the fact my body was channeled 2-1/4 inches.

Are you guys serious?? Three pages of "My trophy is bigger than yours"?? I don't build my cars to win the approval of some self proclaimed judge at a car event and niether should anyone IMO! Does getting a award really matter to you? If so between my Dad and I we could probably easily fill a 2 cubic Yard dumpster full with plaques and Trophys from various car events from all over. But who gives a shit? I for one sure as hell don't! No award that he or I ever got made our lives any better or easier. They are mostly in the basement collecting dust and taking up space.

This Ricky Craven chassis without the body I built for about $12,000.00 in 1990. I was out of the race car business in 1991 because I never received one single inquire about building a race car chassis. I went into the used car business dealing in sports cars. Made enough money to put my 2 daughters through college. Retired in 1997 to build my hot rod collection. PS; Ricky kicked ass when all the Southern G N drivers came North for the $50.00.00 to win Oxford 250. Ricky kicked ass when all the Southern GN drivers and several Cup drivers came North for the Louden N H race.
