1963 C10, this guy bought it at rod run, of course that's where all the cool cars are huh? This fella paid good money for this truck, and came to me about a bubble on the door. None of the paint is stuck. I feel sorry for the little ol feller. 20240628_134345.jpg 20240628_134350.jpg 20240628_134358.jpg 20240628_134404.jpg

I remember a few years ago, an otherwise real nice looking Merc build did the same thing. What exactly causes this? Was the epoxy wetsanded too smooth, or was it a problem with flash times or something?

This is a shot of my 48 after I traded back for it in the mid 70's. I sold it in 1974 and traded back for it in late 75 or early 76 and it had been painted twice after I sold it. The kid that had it would roll it into his brother's body shop, wipe it down and spray on what ever left over paint his brother had around.

A late night trip to the McGregor Tx car wash with a pocket full of quarters pealed off most of it in short order and after the car wash owner said that he wasn't paying for my paint job because I had washed it off I said if the had a broom and something to pick the paint up with I'd clean it up before I left.
Bad adhesion and bad prep. Screenshot (485).png

  6. Reminds me of a car we painted with synthetic enamel decades ago. Woman took it to the car wash the next day and blasted it with the wand. Brought car back and was very unhappy with our lousy paint job.

  7. M&M's paint job, because it's just a hard shell coating.

At least it'll be easier for ya to strip it. Thats part of the reason Id rather buy an ugly honest beater. I just dont trust other people & their work.

Did he buy it like that or how long did it take to come off?

He said the guy that bought it came to him about a bubble on the door, and then Lloyd discovered the paint wasn't adhered on the whole truck.

Is this just bad prep, incompatible materials, or something dumb like leaving it in primer for 10 years before painting it?

This is my guess, but it's got a ton of lacquer primer on it, and it looks like they put a Sealer over that, the Sealer is peeling off of the primer. At first I thought it was fill & sand, but I'm not sure. The majority of what I showed, was stripped with the air hose. It's bad. But I'll make it better.

what should a person do with a car that has been in primer for 10 years before painting it?

  16. Ford repainted my OT truck back in the 80s because the paint was peeling off like that. Incompatible primer/paint. So even the manufacturers mess up sometime. Lloyd will fix it.

More bad news if you wish to tell the owner. Wrap around front glass ended on 63’s. Front fender emblem also suggest’s (if original fenders) 64 model year when they went to slanted a- pillars.

Mr critical Johnny lol... I don't know what year this truck is, I just paint them. I put a disc brake setup on a 63 this week, so I'll call them all 63 for a while

It’s because I’ve thinking of getting that body style truck of late. I also did not know until a few weeks ago.

  26. Good to know. My car was a “stalled” project from at least 20 years ago. I was hoping to paint it with some “marine” polyurethane I have on the shelf. Think that will work?

And why do you sand it? To strip off the surface.

Maybe they got a nice batch of the edp primer from the late 90s early 00s. Remember all the factory paint jobs you could remove with a blow gun?
Sucks for the guy who bought it, that’s for sure.
