If the primer is still good after 10 years I'm with Lloyd. Sand it and start spraying.

It looks like "chip paint" back in the 80s, Ford came to San Diego to shoot cars for their catalogs. The used the Scripps Ranch area and Miramar for the shoot. I was managing a shop very close to where they were shooting and asked if the could use part of our lot to store cars and prep them for the next days shooting. They used a portion of our lot and set up a portable spray booth. Most of the cars were white and they used "chip paint" to change color to have different looks for different models. The paint looked normal but could be peeled off in large sheets in minutes. Afresh rinse and a new color could be applied. Quite clever, but the paint was too fragile to stay and would lift and blow off if driven very far. The paint was blended specifically for quick coverage and easy removal. They used our lot for about 4 days to store the cars and change colors to make it look like a different color. No interior shots were used. They did that with cutaway and backdrops. Interesting and non-useful in the real world. Good cocktail party conversation piece though.

That guy is going to tell all his friends "that Lloyd is amazing, he stripped my whole truck in one day and he didn't charge for any sand paper!"

if you stripped it in big sheets you could have then sprayed it with glue and put them back on.;)

I always add some Elmers glue to the paint...it sometimes gums up the damn paint roller, but helps paint stick to the car real good and look real purdy

I'd send a paint sample to Dupont and have them analyze it. I had a vette I stripped with a razor blade. Paint came off in sheets like that. I got the hood paint off in one complete sheet. I sent in the paint off a headlight door, Dupont said there was traces of silicone present, preventing the chemical bond. The primered surface was contaminated before the paint was applied.

Proceed with caution but @anthony myrick already knows that.

Reminds me of my FIL in the 60s. Pretty nice 50 Chev pickup that wasn't red and he wanted it red. So, he washed it, wiped it down with gasoline, yep, gasoline. The sprayed with a cheap gun and diaphragm compressor (remember those?), and some generic red paint from the hardware store. Peeled like an apple.

You have to believe that there was some serious contamination going on before that black was sprayed.
I can remember back when Silicone wax first came out that friends who were bodymen/painters had a hell of a time with cars that it had been used on.

Looks like you have a honeymoon night truck.
You have to undress it to see if you’re going to get excited… or not.

    In this case :)……

If you've already signed on the dotted line before inspecting the contents , I'm not sure what to tell you ...

Some of the patina savers that people use will cause future paint to be problem. Nothing wrong with keeping the patina from getting worse, but think twice before you spray the latest goo on you ride to make it last until you can afford the paint job you really want. And if you do use them, make sure you tell whomever is going to paint your ride so you don't wind up like this poor guy.

  18. One of the higher end paint jobs I was a part of was a bare body drenched in WD.
Took a couple of us 2 solid days of cleaning. A couple gallons of wax and grease removers, boxes of rags and finished up with metal prep cleaners from ppg.
Car still looks good 15 years later.
It’s all prep and following instructions.
Kinda wonder if this truck set for a while after prepped for paint.
Wonder what grit it was finished in. Looking closely on the back side of the removed paint could tell that.

I've seen some of the bigger pieces that don't show much of a sand scratch. Have you ever used 2k primer and cut it 10% to use as Sealer? I've heard of guys doing it, and it's got me wondering about this one. If my Sealer sets longer than I'm comfortable with, I'll hit it with a scotchbrite before I spray color. I've been bit before lmao

  21. Same here.
If it sits it gets sanded.
Especially urethane. The tech gurus tell me it loses tooth when it sits after sanding.

I use a 1K Axalta sealer in my shop, and I purposely let it dry so I can run a pad over it, cheap insurance.

they should have washed the broom before using it to paint the truck

  24. I see raised eyebrows when the term “1k” is used. Then I ask em about their base. Sometimes you get a “I put a cap full of hardener in my base”.
And yep, catalyzed base exists. I haven’t used any in years.

Lol you're right. I still use quite a bit of Nason basecoat, it calls for a catalyst, but I never use it.

  26. I’ve done it both ways.
No issues. Crap, ya forget and spray it it then nothing happens.
A student mixed up some epoxy. We sprayed it. He reduced it. No catalyst.
Over 5 years ago. Still on the chassis.

In Australia we had 1960-1962 Holden FB - EK. They had those 'knee knockers' as well. Harv would know all about them.
