I too miss the catalogs, but I have had nothing but good experiences with Speedway Motors and their staff. The phone wait can be a bit long sometimes but I have learned to call during slow periods.
So we need a paper catalog to order online? but on a side note: we might be running out of catalogs to use as emergency TP but you can still scrape yourself with a credit card
I've always ordered on-line from them. Usually get whatever I've ordered the next day (I'm in Michigan). This entire thread reads like that SNL fake ad for "Alexa Silver"...
The Sears Catalog was great. In the late sixties, my DD was a '50 Buick Special Sedanette with a stick. When the transmission went out and the local junkyard didn't have one, my mother said, "Let's look in the Sears Catalog". I pooh-poohed this, but she found a listing and called the main Sears store on Lake Street. Yep, they had one, but it was at their Knollwood branch. This was actually only 5 or 6 miles from my house. I went and picked it up for around $60, and installed it in the car. This was also when I learned that those old Buicks had torque-tube drives, which complicated the matter somewhat, but everything turned out fine.
Here is the 2023 street rod catalogue: https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Catalog/view/178 Open the link, right click and select print. Then select "print all pages". Instant reading material............... in a few hours. Hope you can afford all the paper and ink.
I do miss the days of catalogs because I enjoy reading printed media and pouring over the minutiae of good advertising. I have several old PAW catalogs from the 90’s and early 2000’s and still enjoy looking through them occasionally. I live close to Speedway so if there’s something I need I just go pick it up. I also order from Rock Auto, Summit, Jegs, and many of the other smaller specialty manufacturers, I want to support those that sell the things I need.
When I was a teenager in the early to mid 1990s I used to wear the covers off the J.C. Whitney catalog. I remember occasionally the local grocery store would have it in the magazine section for a buck or two. It had all kinds of cool accessories back then.
I am the last person on earth who still gets a paper pay check, carries/pays cash, and orders by phone or in person? In fact I have never ordered anything online. I don’t text, E-mail or own a Smartphone, but then again I still run points drum brakes, and bias-ply tires! Keep in mind I am only 42! I would like to know how this is going to effect the oval track side of Speedways business, I can’t believe it going to be a very popular move
Of course we all have to recognize that we do in fact participate in this modern connected age. After all, we're using some kind of computer to log into this site, and post our comments. Is this considered social media? I'd like to think not, but in fact it is. We do however play by defined rules, and most of us seem to enjoy the textual repartee. And I will admit, the daily driver is ot, under 2 years old and under 15k miles. But the only thing I do to it is open the hood, find the windshield washer fluid reservoir and refill as needed. Everything else it goes to the dealer or my friend who is a local mechanic. Yes, I've gotten old and crotchety. Damn proud of it, too
Where did this info come from? You can still order a free catalog on the website and have it mailed out to you. I can't find any information about them stopping their printed catalogs........
That blows, looks like I need to keep my most recent copy in good shape if its the last ill ever recieve.
Dave us old farts have to remember to drink our prune juice, eat out shredded wheat, and let our belts out a notch or two , too help with crotchety ass syndrome Dan
Yogi's still puts out a nice catalog. A lot of street rod stuff, but some of everything. Buy as much as you can from them and tell them each time you order that you are shopping with them because they have a catalog?
No, I tend towards shorts and baggy xxl normal tee-shirts with smartass sayings on them. My older brother gets me a couple a year. And I reciprocate. We see who can top whom each time. Today's says "I thought growing old would take longer!" Yeah, he slipped up on this one. And I don't remember what the one I got for him said. Must be slipping up in my old age...
My brother has a tee that says “Fuck You, I’ve got enough friends “ supposed to get me one but I haven’t seen yet Dan
Phoning the place so they can use their online catalog to order a part It does keep that person busy and that’s good
This whole thing is a bit like beating a dead dinosaur. I'm not yet 40 but I grew up reading catalogues front to back, inside and out to see what was available from various stores, whether it was Sears, toys, car or snowmobile stuff, etc. I loved the ease of finding information in the parts catalogues my dad had at his automotive repair shop. Catalogues have their place, but they come from the time when print and mail was the easiest way to get information to the customer. Yes, Internet has replaced catalogues. It's funny how several people on here lament that a company cutting costs is a bad thing while also lamenting how bad customer service is. Keeping catalogues up to date, logistics of printing and shipping, etc. all take manpower and money. Not having that expense hopefully allows them to put that money elsewhere. Just like we learned how to use catalogues, we can learn how to use search functions to our benefit. There is considerably more information online than a catalogue can offer, but you just need to learn how to access it. Speedway, Summit, and Rock Auto have great search functions.
Being a troglodytic luddite, or is that a ludditic troglodyte, I must confess to preferring print, however I know that I have to make an effort to get into the 21st century. Robert is 6 volts in a 12 volt world. I would hazard a guess that like the song by Joe Walsh, Analog man in a digital world, we're all somewhat the same...
