I have been trying to get a 51 Chev truck running. It has been a trying experience. And now, with the engine out, we have found that we need a new clutch. One would think that would not really be a difficult issue but in this case the truck was equipped with the heavy duty 10 3/4 inch 9 bolt unit. I have looked around and the two vendors that i spoke to have no stock and no anticipated ETA for new stock. Hoping someone can suggest an outlet that might have one or as a last resort a company that can rebuild the OE piece that might be east of the Mississippi.
This is the pressure plate we are dealing with. It is destined to go behind a 54 235.

might be easier to find a different flywheel?

then if you get the 55-later version, you can use a 12v starter with it, as well.

The weird thing is that I though only GMCs used the 9 bolt pressure plate. Are you sure it's a Chevy engine? Or is this just one of those things I didn't know about old Chevy trucks?

That's the version that came with the 4 speed as standard equipment & HD in 3 speed cars & trucks. Most farming state dealers wouldn't order anything else in a truck. If used would work for you, PM me.

I had a ‘73 Cutlass, I ordered it with a 4 speed. Still have the pressure plate and I think a six bolt pp might work on your flywheel. The dimensions are as follows-
    Bolt circle diameter - 11 5/8, C to C of bolt holes - 5 13/16
My clutch is 10 1/2” but you never know, a six bolt might bolt to your flywheel.
One other thing, there are low and high diaphragm pp’s, mine is high but there were also short and long throw out bearings if you find a high diaphragm plate that works for you.

    I like Squirel's idea.
Meanwhile have you talked to Fort Wayne Clutch? Likely they can help

  8. I called Fort Wayne Clutch and was able to source the clutch I needed. I didn't think it would be tough to find but it was. However, one quick phone call to Fort Wayne Clutch, they had what I needed in stock and sent it to me very quickly. Excellent service.

i ran in to the same problem with a 41 chevy 3/4 ton with a 216. so yes they did use them on chevy trucks. i lucked out and found a guy locally that had a bunch of nos gm parts. lo and behold he had one in stock it was a bit rusty but cleaned up. he was happy to sell it and i was very happy to get it.

Yes, this was behind a 51 216 3/4 ton truck as well. I have a call into Ft Wayne clutch to see what they can offer.

You may have to have your clutch rebuilt.

Wow, Ft Wayne had a new unit but it is $500 after exchange. Ky. Clutch wanted 175 with a one day turn around on rebuilding our unit. Just shipped it to them. Thanks fellas for all the input.

Ft. Wayne Clutch used to be the place for flathead clutches but from what I've heard not so much anymore. Glad Kentucky Clutch came through for you. Let us know once you get it back and installed.
