    Hello,

We were at my friend’s house getting all of our surf trip gear together. The two longboards were going to be put in the rear open window, while we made sure to store the glass and rubber surround.

    Note:

I did not want to put surf racks on the sedan delivery. The front had drip rails, but the rear had none. The side panel was smooth and there was no way to secure the back of any surfboards. We tried to use one rack in the front roof. Then, as the longboards were laid on top, we tied down the rear fin area with rope to the bumpers on a “V” angle.

All was good, until the fins started in a different shape not conducive to staying put when we went around corners or made passing lane turns. Passing, that was funny when I typed it, but there were some times heading down hill on PCH that we actually passed some slow old folks… wait, we are now those old folks… yikes!

So, we had to improvise how to take our longboards to the waves safely. In looking at the length of the boards put in place with the open door was not going to be safe or efficient. So, we kept looking and decided to take out the rear solid window from the closed door. Simple enough with the slit in the rubber outside “h” shaped holder. Once the holder was taken out, the window just popped out and a new opening was created.

It was just wide enough for one of our longboards sitting on a towel over the sharp metal edge. Now, another towel and another longboard could fit easily. Once secured inside, we took it for a drive around the block. It held in place, but we could smell fumes pouring into the open spaces. So, we stuck old towels, t shirts and what ever we could find to plug up the holes. The view was gone and the rear window was so high anyway that any view was of large diesel trucks and nothing else.

Now, with the no deadly fumes at slow speeds and freeway speeds, we were ready to go. So, I asked my friend to check all tires for full air and readiness. We hit the road as fast as one last sandwich would take to eat.

So, here we were in Bixby Knolls with our camping stuff, cooler with tons of food and extra clothes for a long weekend stay. We were going to park in a residential area that was close to the Camp Pendleton military base just at the Southern end of the city of San Clemente. We would arrive before dawn, grab our surfboards and put in the secure rear window. Then in the dark, quiet of the early morning, trek about a mile to the beach and waves. The area was fairly empty, but there were a few homes scattered along the random streets.

After spending all day at the beach, hiding from the Marine patrols by digging our lunches and towels in the sand for camouflage, we paddled out to deep water to keep the Marines from arresting us for trespassing. Sooner or later, they gave up and left back to their Oceanside Marine outpost.

So, now, we walked out on the trail back to our sedan delivery and ate dinner, laughed at the action on the beach and fell fast asleep until the next early, dark morning to start all over again.

The final day was getting back to the sedan delivery in the falling afternoon daylight. As we loaded the sedan delivery, I noticed the right rear tire a little low in air. So much so that we could not drive to the nearby gas station. So, I told my friend to get out the spare tire.

We thought it was strange for our tire to be flat. But, rumor had it that the roving CHP was known to let air out of tires of suspecting surfer cars, vans, station wagons, etc. ha! Or, since we were close to the entrance/exit to the military base, the roving beach patrols could have come up to the public streets to let the air out of suspecting cars, etc. (late at night)

He did and rolled it up to the now, jacked up rear tire opening. When the new spare was put on, it too, had little air and sank like an deflated balloon. So, now, we had two tires that needed air. Since the gas station was about a mile away back in the southern portion of the city border, we played Rock, Paper, Scissors and I won two out of three tries. Much to the chagrin of my friend. We laughed at the two almost airless tires and he asked for another 2 out of three match in R,P,S one more time.

But, I told him that it was “karma” due to the fact that he was supposed to check all tires back at his house in Bixby Knolls, as I was doing the final inside loading and longboard insertion. We both laughed and I gave him one last time to win at R,P,S, but he did not win… While laughing, he started his mile away walk with one tire rolling in front of him. Ha! I took a nice long nap until he came back with a fully inflated tire for the long coastal trip home, after we ate a nice burger/fries/Coke dinner, in town. Yummy… YRMV

The first thing that came to mind was a stage prop for a high school production of Grease…

If you only have one of those drawers, you are an amateur. You need to step up your game.:D

I'm ready to tow the 30' long enclosed trailer now.

And the new safety chain set up is just right for the hitch.
    What could possibly go wrong?
    The trailer is insured.:D
