    Hello,

The Jess Van Deventer Modified Roadster was a hard charging roadster. It was one of the first films of a competitor I took at Lion’s Dragstrip in early 1958. He had already won many trophies in the Modified Roadster Class and his presence at Lion’s Dragstrip was always fun to watch and see.

Jess Van De Venter San Diego

That set up was/is a very old system. It would be interesting to know the facts in your motor build and what class it actually ran back in those days. NOTE: Most of the “Big Boys” ran with 671 blowers on an SBC for those gas coupes and sedan classes, then, most went to hemi motors.

But, these smaller blowers were good for additional boosts in various other classes. Jess Vandeventer was running what looks like a 3-71 blower. Jess set many national records and won many a national event with this car.

    Note 2:
An old HAMB conversation with Randy Chenowith from San Diego:

The unknown white roadster has been identified as belonging to Jess Van Deventer from San Diego. Here is the message I received from the San Diego Racing Museum Website:

"My name is Charles Randolph Chenowth , I go by Randy Chenowth. On the HAMB I am BIGDADDYUSMC ...

The white Roadster in your movie is Jess Van Deventer or his brother,,,, they both drove the car in the very late 1950's & early 1960's

The number on the car never changed ... it is #502 ( California penal code for drunk driving )

My father built that car in his garage in Imperial Beach, California in the late 1950's..It was originally built for a Bean Bandit... The T roadster was traded to Van Deventer for a street legal 32 roadster..."

Thanks Randy... Great information on all things racing in San Diego History...
